Abstract

ABSTRACT: This paper analyzed the CRs (Compliment Responses) performed by Indonesian lecturers of English at the English Department UNIBRAW (University of Brawijaya) in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia, when interacting with their colleagues in the workplace based on sex differences. This research used qualitative approach to analyze the compliment responses performed by the lecturers. The compliment responses were analyzed based on Robert K. Herbert (1986)’s theory. It was shown that the responses given are various. The lecturers are most likely to accept compliments by appreciation token, both in verbal and non-verbal responses. Moreover, most of the responses are combination of two or more types of CRs. In relation to gender, male and female participants give similar responses, yet male tend to use question preceding or following the responses, while female tend to use comment avoidance. Regarding the L2 (Second Language) competence, this study found out that the lecturers still retain their L1 (First Language) culture in appreciating a compliment, regardless their competence in English, both linguistically and culturally. In conclusion, the variety of compliment responses given by lecturers of English at the English Department UNIBRAW might be caused by their habit of expressing themselves freely without too strictly bound to the norm in which they are related. Complimenting events for them can be used as media to create feeling of solidarity.KEY WORD: Compliment Responses; Indonesian Lecturers; English; Gender; Culture. About the Authors: Yana Shanti Manipuspika, M.Appl.Ling. and Emy Sudarwati, M.Pd. are the Lecturers at the Study Program of English Literature, Department of Language and Literature FIB UNIBRAW (Faculty of Humanities, Brawijaya University), Jalan Veteran, Malang City 65145, East Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study deals with a strategy named GD (Group Discussion) model of cooperative learning strategy applied in the teaching of critical reading course at English Study Program at the UNIBRAW (Brawijaya University) in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia. By using that strategy, it is expected that the problem in Critical Reading class can be solved and students’ ability in critical reading will, in turn, be improved. The design of the study is CAR (Classroom Action Research), since the study is aimed at improving the students’ critical reading ability and solving the classroom’s problems on the teaching of reading. Based on its characteristics, the CAR is done repeatedly until those problems can be solved. Dealing with the classroom setting, the study is directed to develop the teaching strategy in order to find out a solution to the classroom’s problem in the teaching of reading. This study reveals that cooperative learning strategy has successfully improved students’ critical reading ability. In doing so, there are stages conducted, namely: having cooperative work organization, using appropriate media, having creativity (for teachers), monitoring teaching and learning processes closely, and giving students feedback on their work. In conclusion, cooperative learning can be beneficial for students’ learning in critical reading as it can make students active and enjoy the classroom activities. However, it also has weaknesses, such as time consuming and less appropriate for classes with bigger number of students. Despite the weaknesses, teachers are still recommended to apply this strategy in Critical Reading classes.KEY WORDS: Critical Reading; Students’ Ability; Cooperative Learning; Group Discussion; Classroom Action Research.  About the Authors: Emy Sudarwati and Yana Shanti Manipuspika are the Lecturers at the Study Program of English, Faculty of Humanities UNIBRAW (Brawijaya University) in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia. Abstract

As Covid-19 cases soared in Indonesia, various efforts have been made by the government to overcome the spike in cases. This study aimed to examine the model of compliance with the Covid-19 protocol for migrant Madurese through perceived risk of Covid-19, citizen trust, locus of control, and anti-vaccine attitudes. A total of 245 migrant Madurese community were recruited by purposive sampling. The results showed that the theoretical model of compliance with the Covid-19 protocol was built through Citizen Trust, Locus of Control, and Anti-Vaccine Attitudes, while risk perception as a moderating variable had no effect on the compliance with the Covid-19 protocol. The results also showed that risk perception did not have a significant effect on the compliance with the Covid-19 protocol, but risk perception was influenced by citizen trust and anti-vaccine attitudes. Citizen compliance and anti-vaccine attitudes only had a direct effect on compliance with the Covid-19 protocol without any mediating variables.

We perform pragmatic and phonological analyses alongside morphology and syntactic analyses on data collected from studying documents, observation, and interview results. The qualitative descriptive linguistic method is used in this study to provide a detailed description. The result shows some deficits performed by the DS caused by articulatory limitation, difficulty to follow some words in long statements, and difficulty to respond to the topic that he has not known before.
