Abstract

Anemia is a condition in which the hemoglobin (Hb) level in the blood is lower than the normal range based on age and gender. Adolescent girls are at a higher risk of experiencing anemia because their growth requires higher nutritional intake, and other factors such as insufficient iron consumption, menstruation, medication, and tea consumption after meals can contribute to it. The negative impacts of anemia on adolescent girls include reduced immunity, impaired concentration in learning, decreased fitness, and decreased productivity. Community engagement activities aim to provide socialization about Anemia Prevention to adolescent girls in Desa Sigalogo, Tapanuli Utara Regency. The methods involved in these activities include needs identification, program planning, socialization implementation, and evaluation. The results of these activities demonstrate an improvement in the knowledge of adolescent girls regarding anemia and an increased awareness of the importance of prevention. They also performed well in the post-test, which measured their understanding after the socialization.

Abstract

Nutritional problems in infants and toddlers are still a serious challenge in health development in Indonesia, especially in areas with limited access to information and health services. This community service activity aims to conduct anthropometric measurements as an effort to detect the nutritional status of infants and toddlers early and provide nutritional education to parents in Laucih Village, Medan Tuntungan District. This activity was carried out by lecturers and students of the Nutrition Bachelor Study Program, North Sumatra Health Institute (INKESSUMUT) as part of the 2025 community service program initiated by the INKESSUMUT Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM).The methods used include measuring weight, height/length, and upper arm circumference (LILA) of 45 toddlers using WHO standard measuring instruments. The data was then analyzed using the WHO Z-score reference to determine nutritional status. In addition to measurements, this activity also includes nutritional education to mothers of toddlers regarding the importance of balanced nutrition, correct feeding practices, and regular monitoring of child growth through Posyandu. The results of the activity showed that the majority of toddlers had good nutritional status (68.9%), but there were still cases of malnutrition (17.8%), severe malnutrition (4.4%), and risk of stunting (8.9%). These findings indicate the need for further intervention and assistance to families who have children with problematic nutritional status. The nutrition education provided was also well received by the community and was able to increase parents' understanding of parenting and feeding patterns. This community service activity shows the effectiveness of collaboration between higher education institutions and the community in supporting the national program to accelerate the reduction of stunting. In the future, similar activities need to be continued with a more comprehensive and sustainable approach, including training of cadres and utilization of local data for planning nutritional interventions. This community service is also a real form of implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in the field of community service which has a direct impact on community welfare.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnant women is a nutritional problem that can reduce immune function, impair children’s cognitive and motor development, and increase the risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications. At Puskesmas Sibiru-biru, Deli Serdang Regency, a community service program aimed to improve mothers’ knowledge about anemia and its prevention by providing them with supplemental foods made from local ingredients, such as moringa leaf and banana cookies. A total of 30 mothers with children aged 1 to 5 years actively participated in counseling, discussions, and hands-on cookie-making activities. The results showed that participants’ knowledge and interest increased through instruction combined with practical exercises. Additionally, the cookies were well accepted as a nutritious alternative for supplementary food. By utilizing local foods, this program helps families prevent anemia.

Abstract

Nutritional status is one of the risk factors that can cause the incidence of tuberculosis. The income level of parents has a close relationship with economic status and will indirectly make TB transmission easier. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that attacks the lungs and is caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). This study aims to determine the relationship between nutritional status and parental income level to the incidence of pulmonary TB. This type of research is quantitative with a case control approach, the sample calculation in this study uses the total sampling technique using inclusion and exclusion criteria so that a sample of 17 controls and 17 cases is obtained. Then anthropometric measurements and interviews were carried out with parents of toddlers. Univrriat and bivariate analysis were carried out using the chi square test, with the help of SPSS 25.0 with p = 0.05. Based on the results of the study, the p value < 0.05 is the variable of TB/U nutritional status (p-value = 0.039, OR= 4.4, CI= 1.041-18.599). It is recommended to the Nutrition Officer of the Puskemas to increase the activity of screening nutritional status in children under five.

Abstract

Traditional medicine can be an alternative in the treatment of cancer. One of the traditional medicines used as herbal ingredients that has the potential to be anticancer is sidaguri ( Sida rhombifolia Linn.). The leaves of S. rhombifolia are plants belonging to the family Malvaceae . S. rhombifolia plants contain chemical compounds. This study aims to determine the chemical content of sidaguri extract and potential cytotoxicity based on LC50 (Lethal Concentration 50) values in the death of nauplii Artemia salina Leach after administration of ethanol extract and n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate and water. The method used S. rhombifolia leaves that have been in the form of simplicia were extracted with 70% ethanol solvent using the ultrasonication method. Then tested for the content of chemical compounds. Phytochemical screening results showed that S. rhombifolia ethanol extract contained alkaloid compounds, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids. The ethanol extract was further fractionated using the solvents n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water. The cytotoxicity of S. rhombifolia extract was tested using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method using ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction and toxic water fraction against Artemia salina or less than 1000 ppm, of the four test extracts that had the smallest LC50 value was ethanol extract which was 320.15 μg / ml and a lkaloid compounds fractionated from ethanol extract of Sidaguri leaves Fraction n hexan 600.10 μg / ml, ethyl acetate 575.06 μg / ml and water 873.21 μg / ml results obtained that ethanol extract is more cytotoxic than fractionation.
