Abstract

The rabbit farming business has great potential to meet the need for animal protein, and currently, many rabbit farming businesses are being cultivated. Farmers face nonoptimal reproductive performance with the currently implemented mating management, so improvement efforts are needed. The community service aimed to implement good breeding practices through communal mating and introducing bucks Rex rabbits to rabbit breeders in Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta. The community service activities were conducted from June to September 2023 at one of the rabbit breeders in Kulonprogo Regency, Yogyakarta. The activities include: 1. initial preparation and coordination, 2. preparation of extension materials, guidebooks (assistance media), 3. Direct training through extension. 4. Implement communal mating, introduce Bucks Rex directly at partner locations, and distribute guidebooks. 5. Monitoring and evaluation of activity results. The enthusiasm of breeders in community service was proven by the presence of 30 breeders in extension and discussion activities with the theme "Kopi Darat Peternak Kelinci Komersial." The results of the application of the communal mating method show farmer satisfaction, with 4 out of 5 rabbits becoming pregnant from the application of this method. Increasing the reproductive performance of the breeder's doe can increase rabbit production, thereby contributing to the breeder's income. Implementing good breeding practices through communal mating and the introduction of bucks Rex rabbits can be a solution for breeders regarding the low productivity of the rabbits.

Abstract

Senduro goats are a leading local dairy livestock commodity in Lumajang Regency. To increase goats’ milk production and health, the farmers still need additional knowledge and skill about forage standards. This Community Service activity aims to increase farmers' knowledge about the use of local plants to increase the milk production and the health of Senduro goats in Lumajang, as well as to improve their skills in providing feed. The activity used lectures, discussions, and demonstrations. The data of training participants’ knowledge were obtained through pre- and post-tests. Participants’ response were obtained using a questionnaire. The results showed that overall participants’ knowledge about the use of local plants to increase milk production and the health of Senduro goats increased. The clarity of the material delivery, the demonstration of feed formulations, and the implementation were stated to be very good. In addition, the participants hoped that the activity would continue.

Abstract

In Indonesia, dairy cattle farming is often done in a traditional or conventional maintenance. This study aims to determine the farmer characteristics and maintenance systems of dairy in Junrejo Village, Junrejo District, Batu City, East Java, Indonesia. This study used a survey approach and was observational in nature. Twenty dairy farmers were chosen as respondens because they had dairy cows that were lactation period. The data collected included farmer characteristics, land ownership, and livestock management systems. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results showed that the average age of farmers was 52.95±10.51 years, most of the farmers were of productive age with 33.54±12.45 years of farming experience. Most of the farmers were of productive age. Most of them (95.00%) were livestock farmer group dairy cattle. Dairy cattle ownership consisted of 2.50±1.79 dairy cows, 0.20±0.70 dairy bull, 1.42±1.22 heifers, 1.20±1.11 female calves, and 0.60±0.60 males calve. In conclusion, this study showed that farmer charateristics were of productive age, had experience in livestock farming, participated in livestock groups, and raised livestock primarily. Livestock maintenance was carried out in communal and individual pens, pen cleaning, and livestock bathing were performed twice a day.

Abstract

Abstract. Warman AT, Fadhilah GT, Ibrahim A, Atmoko BA, Baliarti E, Panjono. 2023. Morphometric characterization and zoometric indices of female Bali cattle reared in Lombok Tengah District, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 966-974. Livestock body conformation can be described by using their morphometric characteristics and zoometric indices. This study aims to provide information about female Bali cattle's (Bos javanicus) morphometric characterization and zoometric indices using principal component analysis (PCA). The study was conducted by using 149 heads of the female Bali cattle reared by smallholder farmers in Lombok Tengah District, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Morphometric characteristics in this study consists of body length (BL), withers height (WH), chest girth (CG), chest width (CW), chest depth (CD), rump height (RH), rump width (RW), head length (HW), and head width (HW). Therefore, the zoometric indices in this study consist of body index (BI), body ratio (BR), cephalic index (CeI), compact index (CoI), conformation index (CnI), depth index (DI), index of compression (IC), height index (HI), height slope (HS), length index (LI), over increase index (OII), thoracic development (TD), transverse pelvic (TP), and weight (W). Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and factor analysis (principal component analysis/PCA) using SPSS 25.0 program. The average body measurements for BL, WH, CG, CW, CD, RH, RW, HL, and HW were 108.40, 108.35, 148.54, 34.54, 57.50, 106.28, 32.03, 34.66, and 19.10 cm, respectively. The highest correlation coefficient (r) in morphometric characteristics was shown between RH and WH (0.744) and in zoometric indices between BR and HS (0.997). The PCA for morphometric characteristics revealed two factors of PC1 (BL, CG, CW, CD, RW, and HL) and PC2 (WH, RH, and HW), which explain about 67.50% of the total variation. The PCA for zoometric indices revealed four factors of PC1 (CoI, CnI, DI, LI, TD, TP, W), PC2 (BR, HS, and OII), PC3 (BI, IC), and PC4 (CeI), which explain about 90.64% of the total variation. It was concluded that six morphometric characteristics (BL, CG, CW, CD, RW, and HL) were important to describe the body conformation of female Bali cattle and could be used as selection criteria.

Abstract

Abstract. Warman AT, Panjono, Fadhilah GT, Atmoko BA, Bintara S, Widi TSM, Baliarti E, Jannah ZN. 2024. The difference between Bali cattle and Limousine-Bali (Limbal) crossed cattle concerning their qualitative characteristics in Lombok Tengah District, Indonesia. Nusantara Bioscience 16: 104-110. Crossbreeding is a potential approach that farmers might employ to improve the productivity of Bali cattle (Bos javanicus d'Alton, 1823). Exotic cattle breeds, such as Limousin cattle (Bos taurus Linnaeus, 1758), are frequently used for crossbreeding. This study aimed to determine the qualitative characteristic differences between Bali cattle and Limousin-Bali (Limbal) crossed cattle in the Lombok Tengah District of West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Data sampling was conducted in 2 sub-districts, namely Pringgarata and Jonggat Sub-districts. The research used 80 adult female cattle, consisting of 40 Bali and 40 Limbal cattle. The average age of cattle was 4.24 years, and the average body weight was 236.66 kg for Bali cattle and 367.88 kg for Limbal cattle. Local farmers kept cattle using the same intensive methods. Phenotypic characterization included color and physical characteristics according to the guidelines provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). The Data were presented descriptively, and differences across variables were assessed using the chi-square method. The research indicated no significant difference in tail-tip color (P >0.05). The body and eyelid color showed a significant difference (P <0.05). Furthermore, legs color, buttocks color, dorsal line color, vulva color, muzzle color, horn color, face profile, backline profile, horn orientation, and ear orientation differed significantly (P <0.01). Thus, it can be concluded that crossbreeding caused changes in phenotypic characteristics in the next generation. Therefore, phenotypic characterization in the next generation of these crossbreeds must be conducted, and selection criteria must be established to achieve sustainable breeding goals.
