Abstract

Abstract

The process of creation in creating works of art is stimulated by various factors, one of which is the personal experience of the artist who is so imprinted that makes it an inspiration and motivation in the work. In the context of the creation of experiential works of art, it then undergoes a process of internalization and interpretation in an artist, which is then reconstructed back into the medium of art. The reconstruction is related to the reimagining process, which at the level of implementation can vary by artist. Similarly, the work process of Teja Astawa, a young artists who grew up in the coastal environment of Sanur, Bali. Teja’s works highlight his childhood experiences when playing with frangipani leaves and jackfruit leaves which then made into various forms of puppets. That experience made an impression and room in Teja’s artistic life as an adult, especially in the media of painting. Teja also re-knits the series of experiences by bringing back the puppet figures in his work. To begin the reconstruction process, Teja conducted a field study by observing various forms of puppets with their respective symbolic characters.

Abstract

The transformation of traditional performing arts in the digital era has opened new possibilities for transmitting religious values and moral education to younger generations who are increasingly influenced by media-driven cultural change. In this context, the Cenk Blonk shadow puppet show represents a contemporary adaptation of Balinese wayang kulit that combines humor, social criticism, and spiritual reflection, while remaining rooted in Hindu-Balinese ethical teachings. This study aims to analyze the representation of religious values and moral messages in three Cenk Blonk shadow puppet performances uploaded on YouTube, namely Backing Sakti, Tidak Cukup Hanya Cinta, and Sebuah Renungan (Setan dalam Diri). This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using qualitative content analysis of narrative structures, dialogues, and symbolic expressions, reinforced by semi-structured interviews with the puppeteer to strengthen contextual interpretation. The findings reveal that the performances consistently articulate key religious values, including honesty (satya), self-control (dama), tolerance, compassion, and non-violence (ahiṁsā). These values are conveyed through character contrasts, humorous satire, and symbolic conflicts that reflect contemporary socio-political, familial, and religious realities. Moral messages emphasize ethical leadership, household harmony, religious humility, and interfaith respect, presented in ways that encourage reflection rather than didactic instruction. The study concludes that Cenk Blonk performances function as an effective culture-based educational medium that integrates entertainment and moral reflection. Through digital dissemination on YouTube, these performances expand their pedagogical reach and demonstrate the relevance of traditional arts in strengthening contextual, inclusive, and humanistic character development in the digital era.

Abstract

Thousands of Ogoh-Ogoh (towering giant effigies) are paraded across Bali to welcome the arrival of the Saka New Year (Nyepi Day), which falls every March or April. This article examines the evolving aesthetics of these processions, tracing their shift from ritualistic giant figures meant to repel the destructive power of bhuta kala to contemporary hybrid mythic–popular forms that incorporate global pop-cultural icons and local socio-political characters. Employing qualitative methods such as visual ethnography, observation, and semiotic analysis, this study explores Ogoh-Ogoh production across Bali, where creative experimentation is especially vibrant. The findings reveal a significant aesthetic transformation driven by environmental regulations, competitive youth creativity, and the changing visual preferences of younger generations. Material innovations, including the use of LED lighting, have further intensified a performative orientation emphasizing spectacle and technical sophistication. Despite these shifts, ritual continuity endures, demonstrating that ogoh-ogoh remains a living, adaptive tradition in contemporary Balinese society.

Abstract

This study aims to produce a documentary film as an educational medium to explore the impact of gaming on adolescents’ emotional development. The research applies a practice-based approach using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and questionnaires involving adolescents, parents, and experts. The findings indicate that most adolescents engage in gaming daily with durations exceeding three hours. This activity generates various emotional responses, including enjoyment, satisfaction, frustration, and anger. Gaming provides positive impacts such as entertainment, cognitive skill development, and social interaction, but also presents negative effects, including addiction, emotional instability, and reduced direct social engagement. The documentary film is designed using an expository approach to present balanced and reflective perspectives. The results suggest that documentary film is an effective educational medium to raise awareness among adolescents and parents regarding balanced game use in daily life
