Abstract

Oral and dental health training for elementary school students is an important preventive effort to build the habit of maintaining oral and dental hygiene from an early age. This program aims to increase students' knowledge about the importance of dental and oral care and train them in the correct tooth brushing technique. This activity begins with counseling on dental health problems that children often face, such as cavities due to bad habits and high sugar consumption. Furthermore, students are given practical training on how to brush their teeth effectively. The results of the training showed that students were very enthusiastic and were able to understand and practice the correct tooth brushing technique. Question and answer sessions and direct practice strengthened their understanding, while giving prizes increased students' motivation to apply the knowledge they had gained. This training is expected to be the first step in forming a generation that is aware of the importance of oral and dental health.

Background: Children who experience dental and oral health problems can experience a decline in quality. At the age of elementary school children, it is necessary for business actors to maintain dental and oral health regularly, both in counseling, examinations and dental and oral health care, by parents, schools and related government agencies. Objective: To provide dental and oral health education through interactive learning media to students of SDN Inpres Tamamaung 4, Makassar City in 2022. Method: This community service is carried out by providing counseling, using media, namely back and forth worksheets, animated films, and puzzle games that aim to create two-way communication and make students active. Respondents in this community service were 3rd grade students of SDN Inpres Tamamaung 4, Makassar City in 2022. Results: There were 5 respondents (25%) with a good level of knowledge before being given facilities increasing to 14 (70%), there were 5 respondents (25%) with a sufficient level of knowledge before being given facilities decreasing to 4 (20%), and there were 10 respondents (50%) with a level of knowledge before being given facilities decreasing to 2 respondents (10%). Conclusion: Community service activities with the theme "Dental and Oral Health Education Through Interactive-Based Learning Media for Students of SDN Inpres Tamamaung 4, Makassar City in 2022" have been carried out well and received a positive response from the 3rd grade students that we have filtered through screening. Abstract

Patient anxiety during tooth extraction is a common challenge in dental practice that can affect patient experience and outcome of the procedure. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of approaches and strategies to address patient anxiety during tooth extraction procedures. Through counseling designed to improve patient understanding of the causes of anxiety, relaxation skills, and communication with the dentist, this study measured its impact on patient anxiety levels and preparedness. The study involved patients undergoing tooth extraction procedures, where they attended a counseling session that included information on factors that cause anxiety, breathing relaxation techniques, and communication skills. Data were collected before and after the counseling through a survey that assessed patient knowledge, ability to apply relaxation techniques, self-confidence, and anxiety levels. The results showed a significant increase in patient understanding of the causes of anxiety from 50% to 85%, ability to apply relaxation techniques from 30% to 75%, and self-confidence in facing the procedure from 40% to 80%. In addition, the ability to communicate with the dentist increased from 45% to 78%, and anxiety levels decreased from 70% to 40%. These findings confirm that an educational approach is effective in reducing patient anxiety, increasing preparedness, and improving the experience during tooth extraction. This strategy can be implemented widely to improve the quality of care and patient well-being in dental practice.

Abstract

Oral hygiene is an important factor in maintaining children's health, especially in elementary school age. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of education on tooth brushing frequency in improving oral hygiene in elementary school students. This study involved 50 students from grades 4 and 5 at Sekolah Dasar Inpres Batua 1 who were given educational interventions on the importance of brushing their teeth twice a day, correct brushing techniques, and the use of fluoride-containing toothpaste. Measurements were made using plaque index before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant decrease in the average plaque index of students from 2.5 before education to 1.2 after education, with an increase in dental hygiene of 52%. In addition, the number of students who brushed their teeth twice a day increased from 40% to 90%, and students with a plaque index <2 increased from 20% to 70%. These results indicate that the education provided is effective in increasing awareness and good brushing habits among elementary school students. This study concludes that the educational intervention on tooth brushing frequency can significantly improve dental hygiene in elementary school students.

Abstract

Tartar is a common oral health problem among adolescents. Tartar forms from hardened plaque due to a lack of proper and regular brushing habits. If not treated early, this condition can lead to serious disorders such as gingivitis (gum inflammation) and periodontitis (damage to the supporting tissue of the teeth), which impact adolescents' quality of life and self-confidence. Therefore, education about the dangers of tartar and the importance of maintaining oral health is essential, especially in schools. This community service activity aims to increase adolescents' knowledge and awareness of the dangers of tartar and equip them with proper toothbrushing skills. The activity was held on July 5, 2025, at SMP Negeri 1 Manuju, Bilalang Village, Gowa Regency, and was attended by seventh and eighth grade students. The methods used included interactive education, simulations of toothbrushing techniques according to health standards, and the distribution of leaflets as additional information that students can access again. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests to measure knowledge gains, as well as direct observation of toothbrushing practices. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in students' knowledge scores, namely 31.3 points (from an average of 53.4 to 84.7). Furthermore, 92% of students were able to practice correct toothbrushing techniques. These results indicate that an educational approach combined with simulations and visual media is effective in increasing understanding and changing clean and healthy lifestyle behaviors in adolescents. This activity is expected to become a model for sustainable dental health education in schools and be replicated elsewhere.
