Abstract

Rhyme is one of the important elements in the poem. The function of rhyme is to attract the readers’ attention. This study focuses on the rhyme of joyful feeling in the poem “To Autumn” written by John Keats. The objectives of this study are to determine the types of joyful rhyme reflected in John Keats’ poem “To Autumn” and to interpret how the rhyme reflected the joyful feeling in the poem. The Semiotic Theory by Charles Sanders Peirce was used in this study. The methodology used is descriptive qualitative research and a triangulation strategy was used in this study as well as the using of data from library research to present a descriptive issue. The result of this study showed that there are twelve perfect rhymes, eight eye rhymes, and four light rhymes from the “To Autumn” poem and there are twenty words were used to interpret the using of icons, symbols and index based on Charles Sanders Peirce theory.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important aspects in learning English. This study sought the answer of the following question: 1). Is there a significant difference on the students who are taught using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) to improve vocabulary knowledge and students who were taught using conventional method? The sample in this research are 8th grade students of SMPN 3 Parongpong, Bandung Barat in academic year 2019/2020. The students were divided into two groups, one class was taught using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) and the other one was taught using conventional method. This is quantitative research with an experimental design. The instrument used for this study was vocabulary test, which contained 35 questions. The result of the study showed that the pre-test for the experimental group was 51.73 and the conventional group was 51.63 while the post-test results for the experimental group was 78.63 and the conventional group was 60.83. In summary, it can be concluded that there is a significant different between students who were taught using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) and the students who were taught using conventional method in improving students’ vocabulary knowledge. For further researcher, this study can be a reference for researchers to do another study with different level of students.

Abstract

Figurative language aids the reader in understanding the author's goals in addition to making the material more entertaining to read. The following research questions will be addressed by this study by identifying the figurative language techniques and the interpretation of each figure of speech in the book The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle: Book 7. The following questions were addressed by this study: 1) What is the figure of resemblance or relationship used in the novel; 2) What is the figure of emphasis or understatement found from the novel? 3) What is the figure of sounds found in the novel; and 4) How many imageries are found in the novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle Book 7 and the meaning? The research methodology used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data are gathered by the researcher through data collecting from a range of books and library research. Based on the results, there is the figure of resemblance or relationship with 23 kennings, 4 personifications, and 12 synecdoche; the figure of emphasis or understatement with 5 paradoxes and the explanation of the climax; the figure of sounds with 35 onomatopoeias, 74 repetitions, assonance with repetition of the o͞o (u) sound, repetition of the ou sound, repetition of the ā (ei) sound, repetition of the i long sound, repetition of the ə sound, repetition of the ē (i) sound, and repetition of the ai sound; and 17 imageries. The most common use of figurative language categories is the figure of sounds with 35 onomatopoeias and 75 repetitions.

Abstract

Poetry is characterized as a kind of literature or creative writing that uses a variety of poetic approaches to stimulate the reader's emotions and imagination. This study focuses on the metaphorical expression used in poetry in the book "The Everyday Poet" by Deborah Alma. The objectives of this study are to determine the types of metaphors reflected in Deborah Alma’s poetry book "The Everyday Poet," to find out the most common types of metaphors used, and to explain the meaning of the metaphors contained in the poems. The methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained through library research and a variety of literature to present a descriptive issue. The result of this study showed that there are twelve metaphors in the book "The Everyday Poet." There are six anthropomorphic metaphors, one animal metaphor, two abstract to concrete metaphors, and three synesthetic metaphors, and based on the data, the most commonly used metaphor is anthropomorphic metaphor, which has six lines in the book "The Everyday Poet" by Debora Alma.

Abstract

This study investigates students' perceptions at Universitas Advent Indonesia regarding using online games to improve their English vocabulary. The research employs a quantitative design with purposive sampling, involving 120 students across different academic levels. A Likert-scale questionnaire was used to assess students' views on the effectiveness of online games as a learning tool. Results indicate that most students find online games an engaging and effective medium for vocabulary acquisition, mainly due to their interactive and immersive features. Both male and female students and students from all class levels consistently view online games as beneficial for enhancing their vocabulary. The findings suggest that online games can supplement traditional language learning methods, providing an enjoyable and motivational environment for vocabulary development. Future research could explore the comparative effectiveness of various online games and alternative learning strategies.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using the Edpuzzle application in improving students’ vocabulary knowledge and understanding in English language learning. An experimental design was employed with pre- and post-tests conducted on seventh-grade students from SMP 1 Parongpong, Jawa Barat. The experimental group utilized Edpuzzle, while the control group employed conventional teaching methods. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, and paired sample t-tests. The results indicate a significant improvement in vocabulary knowledge among students who utilized Edpuzzle. The post-test scores (M=68.92) were substantially higher than the pre-test scores (M=41.97), demonstrating the effectiveness of Edpuzzle in enhancing students’ vocabulary skills. However, challenges such as limited access to technology and unstable network connectivity were identified as factors influencing the extent of vocabulary improvement. In conclusion, integrating Edpuzzle into language teaching practices holds promise for enhancing vocabulary learning outcomes and engaging students in active learning experiences.

Abstract

Language is a bridge for people to communicate with one another in society. There is formal and informal language in the environment. This study focuses on slang language. Slang language is an informal way to communicate that is commonly utilized by adolescents. They may use slang, but some ages do not. As a result, slang language is only comprehended by certain people. As a result, slang is commonly used in songs. there are many songs that use slang language in the lyrics to deliver the song's purpose to the listener. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods to collect data from the lyrics of The Script's song "The Man Who Can't Be Moved." From the twelve types of slang that exist, five are included in the lyrics: clipping, compounding, coinage, mixing, and dialogue. According to the data, the most commonly used slang language in The Scripts song is blending, which has twelve blending terms inside the lyrics.

Abstract

Euphemisms are a linguistic phenomenon whereby milder or courteous words are substituted for blunt or unpleasant expressions. This study focuses on the use of euphemisms and related expressions in Paulo Coelho's book, "The Alchemist." Specifically, the research aims to identify the various euphemistic devices employed, ascertain the prevalence of such devices, and explicate their significance within the context of the novel. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed, which involved an in-depth and detailed exploration and analysis of the phenomena under investigation. To obtain the necessary data, a comprehensive review of relevant literature and library resources was conducted. The results revealed that Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist" contains several euphemisms that serve to enhance the overall tone and mood of the narrative. The study further identified four distinct types of euphemisms in the novel, namely euphemisms used to soften descriptions of physical attributes, mental states, skills, etc., euphemisms used to make disagreeable situations more palatable, euphemisms used in business contexts, and euphemisms used in other contexts. Of these categories, the most common type, accounting for 44.5% of all instances, was found to be euphemisms used to make something sound more pleasant.
