Abstract

Abstract

Reflection is a crucial part of teaching quality improvement. Teachers can learn a lot from what they did in the classroom dealing with their instructional activities. It indicates that qualified teachers are those who can evaluate and take meaningful reflection from their teaching experiences. This paper aims to expose the importance of self-reflection for English teachers’ pedagogical development as well as to describe how they carry out this one of the professional development activities to improve their instructions. A survey on investigating the professional development activities was conducted for 30 certified Senior High school English teachers as the technique in collecting the data. In addition, descriptive qualitative design was applied to present the findings of this study. The results show that among the 10 professional development activities that were proposed, Self-reflection was the highest choice with 73.17% of participants indicating that they commonly did it for their professional development. They had Self-Reflection by just asking the students to write comments or suggestions, requesting their students to answer some questions or give opinion on the teaching and learning process. Another simplest way was that teachers imagined on what they had done during the teaching and learning process and they made notes as references to develop their teaching performances. Another way of reflection is through recording the teaching and learning process. Regarding the results, it is recommended to regularly apply self-reflection as one of the essential professional development activities particularly in developing English teachers’ pedagogy

Abstract

The integration of character education into language teaching has become a major concern in Islamic education discourse in Indonesia, particularly in response to social polarization, moral erosion, and religious intolerance. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has introduced the Curriculum of Love to instill values of love for God, humanity, nature, and the nation in all subjects, including English language education. This study aims to investigate how the Curriculum of Love is internalized through English language teaching and what pedagogical strategies and materials are used to support this integration at Pondok Pesantren Dalwa, East Java. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The results of the study indicate that teachers at Pondok Pesantren Dalwa successfully integrated the values of the Love Curriculum into English language instruction through contextualization of materials, reflective dialogue, journal writing, and ethical discussions. This strategy not only increases student engagement but also encourages deeper moral reflection, transforming English language learning into a holistic educational tool. However, challenges such as a lack of teacher training and relevant materials still exist. This study contributes to the field of spirituality-based English language teaching, reinforcing the potential of English language education as a means of fostering communicative competence as well as ethical and national awareness.

Abstract

Students' ability to compete in the global arena is essential in the era of globalization. Mastery of English, especially through a content-based approach (CBI), is seen as crucial as a bridge to international excellence. This study aims to analyze the role of content-based English learning in shaping Indonesian students who excel and compete in the global arena. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with students and lecturers, classroom observations, and document analysis at a university in Malang, Indonesia. Data were analyzed thematically. The main results showed that CBI significantly improved students' academic and professional communication abilities, including mastery of specific terminology and presentation skills. The optimal CBI design for international participation involves the integration of global materials and simulation of real situations. Despite challenges such as the availability of teaching materials, student enthusiasm and institutional support were great opportunities. It is concluded that CBI not only improves language proficiency, but also develops students' global competence and readiness to interact in international forums. This research contributes by filling the literature gap on how CBI in the Indonesian context can be a strategic instrument to achieve global excellence, recommending the development of more integrated curriculum and teaching materials.

Abstract

The mentoring program for Scout instructors at SMPN 1 Sukapura, Probolinggo, was implemented to strengthen the integration of religious moderation values into extracurricular activities as part of character development that promotes tolerance and national insight. The main issue identified was the limited understanding and managerial skills of Scout instructors in designing activities aligned with moderation principles. This program applied an integrative mentoring model consisting of preparation, implementation, and reflective evaluation stages. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires involving two Scout instructors and thirty participating students. The results indicate a significant improvement in instructors’ ability to design moderation-based Scout activities, achieving an average competency score of 85%. Students also showed increased tolerance, social responsibility, and collaborative attitudes. The mentoring model proved effective for internalizing moderation values through school nonformal activities. The program recommends applying similar models in other schools and developing further studies on moderation-based Scout training.
