Abstract

This paper is an attempt to describe the result of study on Yabenese language choice, in Konda and Wamargege villages, Teminabuan district, South Sorong regency, West Papua province. It is estimated that the speakers of Yabenese language remain 500 left. As a result of language contact with various ethnic groups, Papua Malay language, and Indonesian language, Yabenese people are faced with the problem of language choice in the various fields. The result of analysis of language choice indicates that there is language shift to Papua Malay language. Speakers of Yabenese language from child and teenage groups do not make use of Yabenese language any longer in domestic field. Meanwhile, the teenage group has only a passive command over their ethnic language. The result of analysis on the basis of Maslow’s need hierarchy shows that to meet all the levels of human’s need, Yabenese people need to use another second language with wider coverage. Fulfillment of the need, specifically physiological need, in this study is considered the impetus of the occurence of Yabenese language shift. Keywords: Yaben, language choice, Maslow’s need hierarchy

The incident around Bintan Island on August 13, 2010 between Indonesia-Malaysia resulted in many protests and demonstrations against the Malaysian Government and the Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). SBY was regarded indolent to act. Public also accused the Indonesian Government had something concealed in this incident. It threatened SBY’s reputation, especially to the positive self image he has built. As one of the ways of saving his reputation, President SBY delivered an official speech regarding the Indonesian-Malaysian relationship on September 1, 2010. This article analyzed SBY’s speech using the dramaturgy framework i.e. the elements of settingaudience and language use. On a wider level, it shows that there is a gap on perceived nationalism between the Presiden SBY and furious public. Keywords: SBY’s speech, performance, dramaturgy, nationalism

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In popular observation, the relation between language and conflict to date is set aside. However, in various conflicting areas, linguistic conflicts are frequently taking place, for instance the disputes over the use of languages. In relation to identity construction, in a certain state, language policy is the heart of formation of national identity. Due to the important role of language, when language is related to some aspects of human life; language can be politicized as well as cause a conflict. This paper discusses a number of historical evidence about repression upon language due to the conflict , language conflict and national identity. Based on a number of historical evidences, it can be argued that a language can become a victim of conflict due to the assumption that language loyalty can overcome loyalty towards the state. At the same time, language can be utilized as a symbol of struggle in an effort to separate itself from the state. In addition it can also serve as a separating symbol among the conflicting groups t. Language conflict can occur either in monolingual or multilingual communities. d The heterogeneity and the similarity of language can be constructed to maximize language as a symbol of identity in line with socio-political changes accompanying the conflict. Keywords: language conflict, identity, language politisation, language discrimination, language policy

Abstract

Previous research on language shift and maintenance is commonly conductedby investigating language use from various domains. However, among theexisting domain classifcations, language use in the domain of tradition hasnever been taken into account. Meanwhile, most of existing languages in theworld have no writing system so that their continuity depends on the formof spoken language and oral tradition. This paper examines the relationshipbetween language shift/maintenance and oral tradition based on the resultof feld research about Kui language in Alor, East Nusa Tenggara. The feldresearch indicates that there is a parallelism between language shift andstagnation of transmission of oral tradition. This means that the safeguardingof endangered languages as an intangible cultural heritage should involve thesafeguarding of oral tradition. Likewise, the safeguarding of oral traditionshould involve the safeguarding of language since language is the mostsignifcant vehicle to communicate and maintain the intangible culturalheritage and knowledge indigenous. Keywords: language shift, language maintenance, oral tradition, intangibleheritage,lego-lego
