Professional caregivers are prone to experience burnout. Burnout is a condition of physical, emotional, and mental fatigue caused by prolonged stress due to work negatively impacts work performance and well-being of professional caregivers. The present study aims to explore the effectiveness of group intervention using Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in reducing burnout and enhancing the psychological well-being of professional caregivers in a nursing home. Five caregivers (four males and one female) participated in four intervention sessions and a follow-up session. Maslach Burnout Inventory and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale was used to measure burnout and psychological well-being, respectively. Qualitative data were also obtained through interviews at the end of the intervention. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test indicated that MBSR was not significantly effective in reducing burnout and enhancing psychological well-being. However, a trend of positive improvement was observed, indicating the potential benefits of MBSR for reducing burnout in professional caregivers. Limitations of this study are explained in the discussion section.

Abstract

This paper discusses how empowerment can be triggered by mystical experiences, byfocusing on mystical experience of the first revelation of Islam to Muhammad PBUH. Only fewliterature on empowerment in mainstream psychology, specifically discuss how empowermentcan be achieved through personal mystical or spiritual experiences. Transpersonal studies giveexplanations of human mystical experiences and extra sensory perceptions. Chronologicalanalysis of the first revelation showed how the mystical experience empowered Muhammad.First, mystical experience is empowerment. Second, mystical experiences can become aneffective and an efficient trigger for empowerment in daily life if understood correctly; andaffirmed with social support. Third, spiritual awakening can unfold into intrapersonal, interpersonal and behavioral empowerment if the person contemplates about the experience, and implement it to benefit others.

Abstract

The cross-sectional research aimed to examine the relationship between stress, positive and negative religious coping, and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) severity. It was a global health issue with a high and increasing prevalence among emerging adults. Various factors’ roles in influencing the severity of NSSI had been explored, including stress and religious coping. Data were gathered from 311 emerging adult (age 18-29 years old) participants in Indonesia using an online questionnaire, which included measures of stress (the Perceived Stress Scale-10), positive and negative religious coping (the Brief RCOPE), and NSSI severity (the Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Function Scale). The research reveals that 40,2% of participants have engaged in NSSI. Analysis using simple regression indicates that an increase in stress predicted with statistical significance an increase in NSSI severity. Meanwhile, analysis using moderation demonstrates that negative religious coping has a statistically significant moderation effect on the relationship between stress and NSSI severity. However, moderation analysis indicates that positive religious coping does not have a statistically significant moderation effect on the relationship between stress and NSSI severity. Thus, stress and negative religious coping play important roles in exacerbating NSSI. The research illustrates the importance of prevention and intervention programs for NSSI targeting stress and negative religious coping.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder which commonly occurs in people who live in big cities such as Jakarta. People with schizophrenia may cause problems to their family, particularly to their caregivers, and the problems may affect caregivers' happiness. Seligman (2005) divides happiness into three periods of life; past, present, and future. The application of positive character in daily life, particularly in their role as caregivers, also influences their happiness. This study was conducted to examine happiness and positive character of middle-aged women who became informal caregivers for people with schizophrenia. Qualitative method through interview and observation was used to analyze the data. Respondents were four women, aged 40-65. The result showed diversity of happiness in the subjects, depending on their positive emotion in the past, present, and future life. Their happiness was also influenced by care-receivers' conditions and their dependability on the caregivers. Positive character also kept the subjects strong to take varios responsibility and other roles.

Abstract

Eating disorders are persistent problems related to eating behavior that can cause physical and psychosocial consequences. The increasing global prevalence of eating disorders underscores the need for an in-depth understanding of these disorders. It is known that the emergence of eating disorders is influenced by excessive evaluation one’s body and attempts to avoid unpleasant experiences. This indicates the role of psychological inflexibility in individuals with eating disorder symptoms. One of the protective factors against eating disorders is self-compassion, which is a gentle and loving attitude towards oneself, even when experiencing difficult experiences or emotions. Self-compassion helps individuals to become more flexible in dealing with their experiences and emotions, thereby avoiding maladaptive behavior. This study aims to examine the role of psychological inflexibility as a mediator in the relationship between self-compassion and eating disorder symptoms. This is a cross-sectional study involving 141 female participants aged 18-25 years (M=22,6, SD=2,02) who were obtained through convenience sampling techniques. Data retrieval is done using three measuring instruments, which are Self-compassion scale, acceptance and action questionnaire-II, and Eating Attitudes Test-13. The results showed that psychological inflexibility had a mediating effect in the relationship between self-compassion and eating disorder symptoms. Moreover, self-compassion cannot predict eating disorder symptoms directly without psychological inflexibility as an intermediary. It can be concluded that an individual's level of self-compassion lead to eating disorder symptoms through psychological inflexibility. The results also support the possible application of self-compassion interventions and acceptance and commitment therapy to treat eating disorder symptoms.
