Abstract

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to converse about urban heritage preservation and its experience. To converse is to colloquially discuss ideas that comes to mind while we are looking back at the 2019 photographs of some parts of Kota Tua Surabaya (The Old Town of Surabaya) and reflect upon our knowledge background, one of architecture, the other of history. This conversation is created through a form of creative writing, creative nonfiction, where we begin with our personal thoughts, one of experiencing ruination and the other of witnessing complexity of urban heritage preservation, one of decay and the other of paint. We involve relevant discourses and the use of visual materials such as collages, diagrams, and drawings as a form of visual inquiry and visual illustration, showing the interpretation, reality, and the imagination of fragments of Kota Tua Surabaya. The process involved in creating this conversation could be one of the ways to creatively build collaborative knowledge and have the writings and the visual materials based on personal voice, expanding the academic form of writings.

Abstract

The first half of the twentieth century in Indonesia is often remembered as the Age of Motion. The term “motion” (pergerakan) is invariably used in history textbooks for students and in the official Indonesian historiography: Sejarah nasional Indonesia (Kartodirdjo, Poesponegoro, and Notosusanto 1975; Poesponegoro and Notosusanto 2008) and in the new edition, Indonesia dalam arus sejarah (Lapian and Abdullah 2012). Political movements in Indonesia always dominated the discourses of pergerakan at the expense of developments in other sectors, including culture. This cultural development, particularly in Java, was intricately intertwined with the upsurge in Javanese and then Indonesian nationalism, an expansion of modernity and Islamic revivalism. Topeng Panji with all of its forms around Java is symptomatic of this development. This paper is an initial investigation into the developments of topeng Panji across Java in the Age of Motion. By tracing the social and cultural histories from the perspective of the bureaucrats, artists, and government officials who wrote in books, journals, and other contemporary sources, this study aims to highlight topeng Panji and its development during that period.

Abstract

Discussions on post-coloniality are often situated either in the centre of the colonizer or colonial metropole or the centre of the former colonized. The local perspective, especially in Indonesia, seems overlooked in existing literature, whereas it could be regarded as the cultural archive of the colonial era to post-independence Indonesia. Edward Said (1994) has said that cultural archives are a storehouse of a particular knowledge and structures of attitude and a reference to and structure of feelings. Gloria Wekker (2016) elaborates on the cultural archive; it has influenced historical cultural configurations as well as current dominant, cherished self-representations and culture. This paper examines the role of two provincial museums in Indonesia: Mpu Tantular Museum Surabaya and the Sonobudoyo Museum Yogyakarta, as cultural archives for each region. Since their foundation in the colonial era by the Europeans and local elite figures, these museums have seen many political changes. This paper delves into the archives and exhibitions of the museums to assess how they deal with their exhibition narratives as a colonial legacy, and to what extent these provincial museums have been involved in decolonization discourse. It proposes another way of looking at the post-colonial situation in Indonesian museums, not at the centre but more on the periphery.

Abstract

Divorce can trigger a sense of life disorientation and difficulties in fulfilling the role of a single parent. Using the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) approach, which emphasizes practical solutions and self-empowerment, counselors assist clients in recognizing their strengths, planning concrete steps to improve their lives, and accepting destiny with patience and sincerity in accordance with Islamic teachings. This study aims to examine the application of SFBT in Islamic counseling as an effort to address the psychological crisis experienced by young mothers after divorce. A case study method was employed, involving five counseling sessions. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and counseling notes, and were analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that the application of SFBT in Islamic counseling is effective in helping clients cope with psychological crises, focus on solutions, and enhance emotional well-being and their role as mothers. In conclusion, the SFBT approach in Islamic counseling can empower young divorced mothers to overcome life challenges and improve the quality of their personal and family life. The contribution of this study lies in integrating the modern psychotherapeutic approach of SFBT with Islamic spiritual values, demonstrating its effectiveness in the cultural and religious context of Indonesian society. These findings provide new insights for practitioners of Islamic counseling and psychotherapy regarding the importance of integrating strength-based and faith-oriented approaches in supporting clients through life crises. Furthermore, this research enriches the literature on Islamic counseling with a practical approach relevant for guiding women after divorce.
