Abstract

Kata kunci: literasi, siswa, sosialisasi bahasa AbstractPupils in school generally come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Many children going to school do not only bring a new language, but also a new culture which is not the same as their school culture in general. These differences can make teachers misunderstand or underestimate the children’s ability as a student. This can hinder any interaction and communication between teachers and students; later, this can lead the teachers to give a literacy instruction that may not be understood by the students due to the difference of how the language is used. The present study applied a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Some participatory observations and interviews were conducted. The observations were conducted in two weeks in a public elementary school SD Negeri Jagir 2 Surabaya. The findings of the study show that the teacher should build more relevant communicative interactions which fit with the culture of the students in the forms of oral literacy activities. These activities involved the teachers and peers at the lower grades such as the first grade one and the second grade. In addition, the students could work in group work where they can use their local language. Keywords: language socialization, literacy, pupils

Abstract

Teachers' views influence how they choose pedagogical methods and how they execute teaching practices in the classroom. An investigation of teachers' views regarding the notion of "language socialization" (LS) and how it may be used to enhance pedagogical application via the use of social networking technologies (SNTs) in a Yemeni EFL setting is the subject of this study. In this study, 30 EFL teachers participated in a survey. Five males were interviewed out of the total number of participants. The findings revealed that the vast majority of teachers had good associations with LS as a teaching method and positive reactions to the use of SNTs in the EFL classrooms even though most participants had never used SNTs in their own classrooms. Because of a lack of access to and training in the usage of SNTs, teachers have been prevented from integrating them into their classrooms when teaching English. This suggests that instructors recognize the important functions that SNTs play in improving students’ language learning and socialization but that they lack first-hand experience and training in how to use them in their classrooms effectively. That there is a shortage of provision must be addressed as soon as possible to guarantee that Yemeni English as a foreign language teachers and their students have the chance to engage with new technologies in order to enhance their educational experiences critically.

Abstract

This paper studies word collocation of “poligami” in two Indonesian novels entitled Ayat-Ayat Cinta 1 and Catatan Hati Seorang Istri 1, aiming to examine cultural perspectives about polygamy in literary works. Corpus data is used as the basis of studies to examine the collocation of the word “poligami” in the two novels. The results obtained are further classified into nouns, verbs, and adjectives using the language theory involving semantic prosody and culture linguistics. Based on the collocations of “poligami”, the two novelists appear to have different attitudes towards polygamy. The neutral attitude in Ayat-Ayat Cinta 1 indicates that the male author is not exactly in favor of polygamy while Catatan Hati Seorang Istri 1 written by a female author is positive and this reflects women’s acceptance of the idea of polygamy in the novel.

Abstract

Literatures have shown that discursive investigation on universities’ vision and mission statements can reveal the universities’ ideologies as well as the prevailing sociopolitical factors in the country. However, there is no such investigation within Indonesian higher education discourse yet. This study seeks to fill the gap by conducting a corpus-assisted analysis on the vision and mission statements of 100 Indonesian universities. By implementing CADS procedures, this study combines corpus linguistics techniques and ideological discourse analysis approach. The final results reveal the social responsibility of Indonesian universities to support public welfare and the emergence of internationalization movement within the educational system of the country, denoting collectivism and neoliberalism as ‘negotiating’ ideologies within the institutional discourse. It is related to none other than the view that universities are institutional bodies that cannot be stagnant as they must always be progressing towards the current development of society and even the world.

Abstract

The present study explores the language and literacy socialization (LLS) of Indonesian children from low- to middle-income families. The Indonesian government has never truly involved home and family as the base for literacy socialization in its programs, affecting the nation-state's low rank in literacy proficiency. This paper aims to describe the LLS of low- to middle-income Indonesian families and examine how the language used by caregivers and parents stimulates the issue of continuity or discontinuity between home and school literacy practices. The study used an ethnographic approach in which the researchers observed the LLS events of 6 families in Surabaya, Indonesia. Conversations between caregivers/parents and children during literacy events were recorded. The findings suggest that every family has different patterns of literacy practices depending on their beliefs and culture at home and that parents' or caregivers' language and style of communication may facilitate or hinder children's access to literacy. Two socialization patterns were identified, including reference to past experience and collaborative negotiation of meaning. It is argued that not only the background of education but also caregivers' literacy culture and educational beliefs play a role in their strategy of language and literacy socialization at home.

Abstract

The rapid development of the internet has given birth to several influential platforms, such as social media. The increasing use of social media triggers the use of a particular community's distinctive language that reflects its culture. This study analyzes the buying and selling registers, functions, norms, and values of the Indonesian SEO Community (KSI). This qualitative research uses research in the form of a selling' feature (chat) sourced from the KS I Telegram group. The data was collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and field notes. The analysis process occurs in the register, morphology, and function analysis stages. Using the theory of the formation of the wordKridalaksana (1992) and Yule (2010), it was found that the KSI register was mainly in the form of basic morphemes or did not undergo the formation process. Other formation processes are abbreviation, the merger of two non-predictive words (phrases), affixation or derivation, compounding (merging), and coinage (combination). Meanwhile, the function of using registers analyzed using the Thurlow & Brown framework (2003) is dominated by SEO terminology. Other registers also function for communication efficiency, persuasiveness, greetings, pronouns, informativeness, and transactions. A significant finding in this study is that instant messaging has a different context of use and pressure than other digital media. This is reflected in checkout registers that function as promotional closures and have lower pressure on buyers than TikTok live broadcasts. In addition, using neutral terms such as agan, colleague, guys, everyone, all, and mbah reflects inclusive and egalitarian community management. Through register analysis from the perspective of Digital Ethnography, the implications of this research can be used by business people to maximize their sales in the digital space.

Abstract

The access to South Korean popular culture has been made accessible by the growth of the internet and the widespread use of social media, particularly in Indonesians' interpersonal interactions. This study aims to examine how registers are used in the Seventeen fan community, commonly referred to as Carat, Group Order, and how well-understood registers are used during the transactions within the Group Order. The data for this study were collected via note-taking, interviews, and observation using a digital ethnography research design on the Line digital platform. The findings indicate that the Carat Group Order uses two different kinds of registers: consultative and informal. Additionally, Group Order members believe that to prevent misunderstandings while performing purchases and sales, it is crucial to properly understand the register when performing Group Order transactions. This further illustrates how the values that are present in the Carat community are represented by an understanding of the use of registers in the Group Order.
