Abstract

Communication competence is the crucial aspect in communication activities, especially in the college. Therefore, college students must have a sufficient competence in communication including English communication skills. As one of the English communication skills, particulary in Semantics, the ability of using lexical relation is important. Based on that phenomena, this study tries to explore the semantic analysis of lexical relations in college students' interactions to uncover the ways meaning is constructed and conveyed in everyday academic communication. By examining spoken and written exchanges among students, the research focuses on identifying types of lexical relations, including synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation. The data were collected through recorded group discussions. A qualitative approach was employed to analyze the lexical choices. Findings reveal that students frequently use synonymy and collocation to ensure clarity and fluency in their conversations, while antonymy and hyponymy are used to emphasize contrast and specificity. The study highlights the importance of raising awareness of semantic relationships in language use, especially in academic discourse, to improve communication competence among students. This research contributes to the field of Semantics by providing insights into how lexical relations shape meaning in real life academic interactions and offers implications for language teaching.

Abstract

This manuscript aims to improve the first semester students of English Program, Bali Dwipa university in writing skills. This article hires qualitative method, Grounded Theory by developing the students’ competence in writing skill. The subject of the research was twenty first students of English Program, Bali Dwipa University. The model teaching used Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE). The students are guided to establish paragraphs by developing the main topic in deductive, inductive, and both deductive and inductive strategies. The result of this research revealed that: In the analysis phase, the lecturer must have good competence to solve problems owned by the students. In the implementation phase, the students needed more times to improve their metacognition. The evaluation indicated that the students had very limited conjunctions used in the paragraphs. ADDIE is an appropriate model in teaching skill since the model enables the students to correct the error. The result of this research has significances for applied linguistic researches such as; Teaching and Learning, Semantics, Psycholinguistics, and Discourse Analysis. Therefore, the result of this research adds applied linguistics references which can be used as reference for the following research.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze word-formation processes and their stylistic functions in selected poems by Emily Dickinson. The research employs a qualitative case study design. Data consisting of words and phrases containing morphological processes were collected through documentation and analyzed through identification, classification, and interpretation based on morphological and stylistic theories. The findings reveal three major word-formation processes: derivation, compounding, and inflection. Derivation emerges as the most stylistically dominant process because it produces abstraction, semantic contrast, foregrounding, and emotional intensification. Compounding strengthens imagery and semantic density, while inflection supports grammatical coherence and temporal perspective in the poems. The analysis indicates that the use of these morphological processes contributes significantly to the artistic and linguistic characteristics of Dickinson’s poetry. Furthermore, the findings highlight the relationship between linguistic form and literary expression in creating poetic effects and deeper meaning. The study demonstrates that morphology functions not only grammatically but also stylistically in constructing poetic meaning and expression. Therefore, morphological analysis provides valuable insights into how language resources are utilized to enhance the aesthetic quality and interpretive richness of poetry.
