Abstract

Vetiver oil is one of the essential oils which are use as perfumeand fragrance material. It has a pleasant odour and a typical charateristic as a fixative agent in perfumes. An oil which has high vetiverol content is usually more appreciated and highly valued. An attempt to perform and high vetivero content from vetiver root by manipulating the time and rate of distillation has been carried out.It was observed that the longer the distillation was proceeded a higher yield of oil and vetiverol content was discovered.Rate of distillation seemed to have he same effect, the faster distillation was taken place, more oil and higher vetiverol was found.

Abstract

Experiment on the use of modified anglo (rural type of stove) and density of bamboo charcoal briquette of Andong (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinaceae) and Petung (Denrocalamus asper) have been carried out to increase its heating efficiency. Observation was carried out on temperature profile, temperature elevation rate, fuel consumption rate and heating efficiency.Analysis on the charcoal briquettes includes moisture content, volatile substance on 950  C, fixed carbon and calorific value. The experiment revealed that the use of bamboo charcoal briquette of Andong and Petung with density respectively of 0.484 and 0.488 in unmodified traditional anglo give heating efficiency of respectively 16.36 % and 17.4 %. Whereas by increasing the density of bambu charcoal of Andong and Petung to respectively 0.5689 gr/cm3 and 0.5021 gr/cm3 and reducing the ventilation of anglo, the heating efficiebcy can be increased to respectively 40.27 % and 45.06 %. Moreover, the tested bamboo charcoal briquette of Andong has moisture content of 6.83 % (wb),volatile substance at 950 C of 22.71 %, Fixed carbon of 71.15 % and calorific value of 6668 cal/g, whereas the bamboo charcoal briqutte of Petung has moisture content of 4.25 % *wb), volatile substance at 950 C of 25.48 %, fixed carbon of 68.19 % and calorific value of 5018 cal/g.

Abstract

Terpinol is one of the compounds which are terpene used as flavorand fragrance materials. In nature it is found in more than 200 derivatives from leaves, herbs and flowers.Syntheticaly it can be prepared from terpene hydrate which are derived from alpha-pinene trough its reaction with sulphuric acid, acetic glacialand aceton. It was observed that when alpha-pinene reacted with sulphuric acid, acetic glacial andaceton in 50:60:10 and 45 ratio,62% alpha-pinene was converted into alpha-terpineol.The contents of alpha-terpineol can also be observed from its refractives indexes and specific gravities, the higher the content had increased the values.

Abstract

Areca nut (Areca cathecu)is an export commodity which still face problem in its preparation.sun drying of areca nut done by the farmers needed 30 days or more.To reduce the drying time ,variation of drying temperature and treatment on the fruit was studied. The study aimed at obtaining the proper drying condition after which the dried fruit could be easly broken and the percantage  of whole nut is high. The temperature used were 60,80,and 100 degree C,while the treatment applied were whole fruit (no treatment),scratched fruit and partially peeled fruit. The result showed that the best drying temperature was 100 degree C.The drying time needed was hours which resulted in 80%whole nut with 13.66% moisture content.

Abstract

Iso-eugenol is one that the compounds which is used as flavor and fragrance materials. The compounds can prepared synthetically from eugenol through a chemical reaction at certain temperature and basic concentration. It was of observed that the concentration of KOH solution and the duration of heat treatment had significantly affected the transformation of eugenol into iso-eugenol. The higher yield was found (82.88%) when eugenol was treated with 50% of KOH at 180 C for 90 minutes.
