Abstract

This paper investigates the role of regional governments in advancing ecological justice within the context of local climate politics in Indonesia. As climate change increasingly affects local ecosystems and communities, the responsibility of regional governments in crafting and implementing climate policies that promote ecological justice has become a critical area of concern. Regional governments, with their proximity to vulnerable populations and ecosystems, are uniquely positioned to drive climate action that addresses both environmental sustainability and social equity. This study explores the policies, strategies, and initiatives of several regional governments in Indonesia, focusing on how local governance structures address the dual challenges of environmental degradation and social inequality. Using a mixed-methods approach that includes policy analysis, case studies, and interviews with local policymakers, activists, and affected communities, the paper examines how regional governments balance economic development with environmental protection, while ensuring the participation of marginalized groups in decision-making processes. Findings suggest that while some regional governments have made significant strides in promoting sustainable practices, many face challenges such as limited resources, political pressure, and insufficient coordination with national climate policies. This research contributes to the growing field of local climate politics by highlighting the importance of ecological justice at the regional level and offering recommendations for strengthening the capacity of local governments to advance both climate resilience and social equity.

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between freedom of expression and the regulation of social media platforms in Indonesia, particularly within the context of government efforts to control online content. As the digital space becomes a significant arena for public discourse, Indonesia has increasingly imposed laws regulating social media, often citing national security, public order, and the prevention of disinformation. This paper examines the impact of these regulatory practices on human rights, focusing on censorship, online surveillance, and the potential stifling of political dissent. Drawing on legal texts, case studies, and interviews with activists, legal experts, and social media users, the paper analyzes how digital censorship is implemented and its implications for the exercise of free speech. The research highlights the tension between maintaining public order and ensuring the protection of fundamental freedoms, specifically freedom of expression. The study also evaluates the role of international human rights standards, such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), in framing Indonesia’s approach to digital censorship. The paper concludes by proposing recommendations for balancing state interests with the protection of digital rights, emphasizing the need for transparent regulations that align with democratic principles and human rights protections.

Abstract

This research investigates Indonesia's foreign policy in the context of its strategic positioning between the U.S., China, and the ASEAN bloc. As one of Southeast Asia’s largest and most influential countries, Indonesia faces the challenge of balancing its relations with major global powers while maintaining its leadership role within ASEAN. This study explores Indonesia’s diplomatic approach, considering historical ties, economic interests, and security concerns. The purpose is to evaluate how Indonesia navigates the complex dynamics of great power competition between the U.S. and China, while also reinforcing regional unity and cooperation through ASEAN. Key findings highlight Indonesia’s pragmatic stance, emphasizing a policy of neutrality, non-alignment, and multilateralism, often seeking to mediate tensions and promote regional stability. However, the research also identifies challenges, such as the growing pressure from both the U.S. and China to take sides in geopolitical disputes. The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive analysis of Indonesia’s strategic balancing act, focusing on how the country leverages its position to advance national interests and regional cohesion. Given the shifting global power landscape, this research is particularly urgent for understanding Indonesia’s role in shaping the future of ASEAN and its broader implications for international diplomacy. This study contributes to the discourse on Southeast Asian foreign policy by offering a nuanced perspective on Indonesia’s navigation of complex international relations and providing recommendations for policymakers in addressing these evolving challenges.

Abstract

This paper provides a critical assessment of Indonesia’s healthcare system from an economic justice perspective, focusing on accessibility and affordability for all socioeconomic groups. Despite significant progress in expanding healthcare coverage under programs such as the National Health Insurance (JKN), challenges persist in providing equitable healthcare to marginalized populations, particularly in rural areas and among the urban poor. The paper analyzes how economic disparities affect access to quality healthcare, with a particular focus on out-of-pocket costs, the quality of care in rural versus urban areas, and the challenges faced by low-income households in affording essential services. Additionally, the study examines the structural barriers that hinder effective healthcare delivery, such as insufficient healthcare infrastructure, underpaid healthcare workers, and regional disparities in healthcare funding. The paper also evaluates the role of the government and private sector in ensuring healthcare access and affordability, exploring whether current policies address the social determinants of health and contribute to reducing inequality in healthcare. The study argues that while Indonesia’s healthcare reforms have expanded coverage, systemic inequalities persist, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for improving healthcare equity, including increasing public health investment, strengthening rural healthcare infrastructure, and improving the efficiency and transparency of the JKN system.
