Abstract

Background: This study aims to identify whether language can be the mediator of the relation between verbal memory and verbal intelligence Methods: The participants that involved in this study are 51 preschool-age children in Pekanbaru, consisting of males (n=24) and females (n=27), ages four to six years. Cluster sampling technique was used to collect the sample. The abilities of verbal memory, language and verbal intelligence were assessed towards each participant individually. Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Test of Auditory Processing Skill 3 and Developmental Profile 3 were assigned as the instrument of the test conducted in this study. Data analysis in this study uses mediator analysis. Results: This study found a positive correlation between verbal memory and verbal intelligence (r = 0.53; p<.05), language and verbal intelligence (r = 0.71; p<.05), language and verbal memory (r = 0.64; p<.05). Conclusion: According to the result of the analysis, it is evident that language can be the mediator of the relation between verbal memory and verbal intelligence.

Abstract

Background: Phonological memory skills have been widely documented to have an effect on phonological awareness performance, but with varying effect sizes. This meta-analysis aims to determine the summary effect size as a reference when considering phonological awareness interventions. Methods: For identification and selection of articles involved in this study, refer to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The database used to search for articles in PubMed. The inclusion criteria used in this study were articles published from 2013 to 2022, free full-text, and the subjects involved in the study did not have neurodevelopmental disorders. Results: Twelve articles were involved in data synthesis. The average sample in the study ranged from 4 years 2 months to 9 years 8 months. Ninety-one percent of the articles used a norm-referenced test to measure phonological memory abilities, while 66.6% used a norm-referenced test to measure phonological awareness abilities. The summary effect size on the relationship between phonological memory and phonological awareness is 0.433 (p <0.001). Conclusion: Professionals should consider the level of phonological memory ability in phonological awareness interventions.

Abstract

Kemampuan naratif menjadi kemampuan yang sangat krusial dan dibutuhkan oleh anak-anak untuk berinteraksi, berkomunikasi, dan menjalani proses pendidikan di sekolah. Penelitian ini sebagai studi pendahuluan yang bertujuan untuk mendapatkan gambaran profil keterampilan narasi makrostruktural berdasarkan kelompok umur anak-anak usia prasekolah. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif deskriptif. Sembilan belas anak usia empat hingga tujuh tahun dengan perkembangan tipikal, berpartisipasi dalam penelitian. Instrumen pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini menggunakan satu gambar sikuen. Pada proses pengambilan data, setiap anak diminta menceritakan secara lisan sebuah cerita bergambar yang terdiri dari empat kartu gambar berurutan. Setiap ujaran ditranskrip dan diberikan skor berdasarkan komponen naratifnya. Berdasarkan analisis, terdapat perbedaan penguasaan elemen dari unsur makrostruktur pada anak-anak usia prasekolah (F = 3.87; p<0.05). Semakin bertambahnya usia, maka semakin lengkap unsur narasi dalam sebuah cerita yang dihasilkan oleh anak-anak usia prasekolah. Atas dasar itu, terapis wicara disarankan untuk menilai kemampuan naratif anak berdasarkan elemen penguasaan pada setiap usia.
