Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out: (1) whether or not Clustering essay Technique is more effective than conventional Technique in teaching writing; (2) whether the students who have high intelligence have better writing ability than those who have low intelligence; and (3) whether there is an interaction between teaching techniques and intelligence in teaching writing. This experimental research was carried out in SMAN I Berbek Nganjuk in the academic year of 2016/2017 from April to June 2017. The population was the eleventh grade students of in the academic year of 2016/2017, and the number of population was 168 students who were divided into four classes. The samples, which were selected by using cluster random sampling, were XI B as the experimental group and XI D as the control group. Each group consists of 42 students. The experimental group was treated by using Clustering essay Technique, while the control group was treated by using Conventional Technique. The data analysis shows the following findings: (1) Clustering essayTechnique is more effective than Conventional Technique in teaching writing; (2) students with high intelligence have better writing ability than those having low intelligence; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques and intelligence in teaching writing.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out: (1) whether in general Scaffolded Writing Strategy is more effective than conventional writing for teaching writing; (2) which ones students who have highcritical thinking have better writing skill than those having low critical thinking; and (3) whether or not there is an interaction between teaching techniques and students’ critical thinking. The experimental class was taught by using Scaffolded Writing Strategy whereas the control classwas taught by conventional Writing Strategy. Each class was divided into two groups in whicheach consists of students having high critical thinking and those having low criticalthinking. To gain the data, two instruments were used namely writing test and criticalthinking test. The data were analyzed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance ANOVA 2x2and Tukey test. Before conducting the ANOVA test, pre-requisite test namely normality andhomogeneity test were conducted. The findings of this research are: (1) Scaffolded Writing Strategy is moreeffective than coventional Writing Strategy to teach writing; (2) The students having highcritical thinking have better writing skill than those having low critical thinking; and (3)There is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ critical thinking inteaching writing. Therefore, it is recommended for English teachers to implement Scaffolded Writing Strategy inteaching writing because this strategy helps the students to improve writing skill andencourages them to be active learners.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan; 1) untuk mengetahui apakah materi berbasis Website lebih efektif daripada buku teks untuk pembelajaran Reading Comprehension; 2) untuk mengetahui apakah siswa yang memiliki motivasi tinggi lebih baik daripasa siswa yang memiliki motivasi rendah; 3) untuk mengetahui apakah ada interaksi antara bahan ajar dengan motivasi belajar siswa dalam pembelajaran Reading Comprehension. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan faktorial desain 2x2. Populasi penelitian ini adalah 8 kelas yang terdiri dari 255 siswa kemudian diambil 2 kelas sebagai sampel dengan teknik cluster random sampling yang terdiri dari 30 siswa sebagai kelas eksperimen dan 30 siswa sebagai kelas kontrol. Peneliti menggunakan kuisioner untuk mengukur motivasi dan soal objektif untuk mengukur kemampuan Reading Comprehension. Data dideskripsikan dengan deskriftif statistik dengan mean, median, mode, dan deviasi standar. Untuk memenuhi uji statistik parametrik dilakukan uji prasyarat yaitu uji normalitas mengadopsi metode Lilliefors dan uji homogenitas mengadopsi uji chi-square (χ). Data di analisa menggunakan multifactor (2X2) ANNOVA. untuk mencari perbedaan yang signifikan satu sama lain peneliti menggunakan Tukey test. Nilai kritis dalam pengujian ini adalah α = 0,05. Setelah analisa data dilakukan dapat disimpulkan bahwa; 1) Kelompok yang di ajar dengan materi berbasis Website memiliki kemampuan Reading comprehension lebih baik dibandingkan dengan siswa yang di ajar dengan buku teks; 2) Siswa dengan motivasi tinggi memiliki kemampuan reading Comprehension lebih baik dibandingkan dengan siswa yang memiliki motivasi rendah; 3) Ada interaksi antara bahan ajar dengan motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran reading comprehension. Ini berati bahwa bahan ajar yang digunakan mempengaruhi motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the types of errors that made by the second year students of English Department of STKIP PGRI Nganjuk in their writing-I and to analyze what factor causes the students make errors in their writing. There are about 30 students who have taken the writing class. This qualitative study was conducted by document analysis and interview. The document analysis was done by collecting students' writing papers; it was taken from the lecturer who taught academic writing class. The paper became the primary source supported by related references as the secondary sources. The whole primary data were classified based on the types of errors, and then they were explained. The writer also used interview protocol to cross check the data got from document analysis. This was important technique to gather the information about the factor causes the students make errors in their academic writing. The research finding shows the type of error that the students often made many errors in tenses. These errors occurred due to their lack of understanding about tenses and their usage. The other minor errors are considered mistakes because they know the rules, especially in using capital, punctuation, and determiners. Based on the interview protocol, the errors were made because of the influence of the first language; the students often think in Indonesian then write in English. The process of transferring the language infected the errors. This also was influenced by the students' habit that seldom read the writing product after they write it. Actually, the errors can be revised if the students can pay much more attention to their writing product. From this evidence, the writer suggested that lectures teach and train their students in constructing sentences in many forms of tenses as prewriting activity. Other suggestion for the lectures is that they remind students about minor mistakes to prevent repeated mistakes. The lectures also have to plan valuable and effective feedback in order to enhance students' development in writing skill.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pentingnya seorang penulis memahami dan mengimplementasikan pola paragraf (paragraph pattern) di dalam menyusun sebuah paragraf. Metode penelitian konseptual adalah pendekatan penelitian yang bertujuan untuk memahami dan menganalisis konsep atau teori tertentu tanpa mengumpulkan data empiris primer. Sebagai gantinya, metode ini mengandalkan pengumpulan dan analisis data sekunder, seperti literatur, dokumen, artikel ilmiah, adapaun hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan beberapa poin tentang pentingnya penyusuna pola paragraf sebelum menuliskan teks. Secara garis besar dapat dilihat hasil kajian mengapa pola paragraf penting dikuasai yang pertama dalah penggunaan pola paragraf di dalam sebuah teks akan memberikan struktur teks yang jelas. Dengan mengikuti pola yang umum dalam penyusunan paragraf, seperti pola induksi-deduksi atau pola urutan kronologis, kedua mempengaruhi kualiats kohesi pada teks, ketiga yaitu Pola paragraf yang teratur membantu dalam menyusun informasi secara terstruktur dan logis. Pembaca akan lebih mudah mengikuti alur pemikiran penulis karena informasi disajikan dengan urutan yang jelas dan terorganisir, dan terakhir adalah efisiensi komuniaksi tulis yang dilakukan oleh penulis dan pembaca.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi seberapa efektif platform ReadWorks digital reading dalam meningkatkan kemampuan reading comprehension siswa sekolah menengah. Sebuah desain dalam subjek digunakan, di mana siswa mengalami dua fase perlakuan: penggunaan metode konvensional dan penerapan platform ReadWorks digital reading. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada siswa kelas dua di SMA Negeri 1 Pace, menggunakan tes reading comprehension standar untuk menilai kinerja mereka. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan uji-t sampel berpasangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan dalam skor reading comprehension siswa ketika menggunakan metode platform ReadWorks digital reading dibandingkan dengan metode konvensional. Analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa nilai p untuk kelompok eksperimen (p = 0,000) dan kelompok kontrol (p = 0,000) berada di bawah ambang batas signifikansi 0,05, yang menghasilkan penolakan Hipotesis Nol (H0) dan penerimaan Hipotesis Alternatif (Ha). Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa platform ReadWorks digital reading efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan reading comprehension di kalangan siswa sekolah menengah atas. Penelitian ini menambah dukungan terhadap integrasi perangkat digital dalam pendidikan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa. Kata kunci: Platform Digital Reading, Reading Comprehension, ReadWorks
