Abstract

In our study, we analyzed the use of deixis in Kamala Harris' speech at the 88th National Convention of the American Federation of Teachers. We obtained the speech script from the US government website and supported the analysis with a video of Kamala Harris' speech to provide context. This was a descriptive qualitative study. We calculated the percentage of data on the types of deixis to identify the dominant use. We collected the data using the documentation method and note-taking technique. The data were analyzed descriptively using Levinson's theory and presented using formal and informal methods. The findings indicated that all types of deixis were present in Kamala Harris' speech, with Person deixis accounting for the highest percentage, with 282 instances (85.71%) and the deictic expression "You" being the most frequently used (62 times). This was followed by place deixis with 6 instances (1.83%), time deixis with 15 instances (4.56%), discourse deixis with 18 instances (5.47%), and social deixis with 8 instances (2.43%). In total, 329 instances of deixis were identified

Abstract

The study examines the theme of “The Chaser” a short story by John Collier. "The Chaser," is known for his complex themes, the contrariety between love and obsession, explores the moral dilemmas that arise when persons attempt to control and manipulate the emotions of others, etc. This study aims to find out the theme of "The Chaser" by John Collier to gain a deeper understanding of the story, because themes provide layers of meaning to a story. The data of this study was taken from the short story entitled “The Chaser” by John Collier. This short story was chosen as the data of this study because this story is easy to understand and has some themes, it provides a basis for deeper analysis. The data was collected through library research and the to collect the data, the researcher applied some steps. The first step is reading the whole story of “The Chaser”, the second step is understanding the story, and the last step is identifying the themes of the story. The data was analyzed using qualitative method. The result shows that there are four major themes in “The Chaser” short story, they are they are love, obsession and desire, changes and loss of individuality, and irony. The analysis dives into how the protagonist, Alan Austen, attempts to earn Diana's affection by unconventional tactics, delving into the deep issues of love and the consequences of obsessive desire. The story depicts the ironic twist in Alan's desire for love, highlighting the risks of loss of individuality associated with such pursuits.

Abstract

This study aims at analysing the types of figurative language and explaining the types of meanings behind the figurative language found in the song lyrics of Laufey’s album titled “Bewitched”. The data was taken from thirteen songs in “Bewitched” album by Laufey. This study was conducted using qualitative method and the documentation method utilized by note-taking technique. This study employed the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1965) to analyse the types of figurative language and the theory from Leech (1981) to analyse the types of meanings. The data analysis was presented in informal way. The results show that all types of figurative were found, with their use varying to illustrate different contexts in the album, from love, personal growth, and the complexities of life. The most dominant type of figurative language is metaphor. The analysis shows that these devices contribute to conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflected, collocative, and thematic meanings in the lyrics. These different types of meaning allow the listener to develop a deeper connection and understanding of the music. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the diverse use of figurative language across various literary works.
