Abstract

The coastal region is the transitional area between the terrestrial and marine environment that has a great change of experiencing pressure due to pollution. This matter can caused by the strong population of Indonesia, quite high tourist activities, sea transportations, and large infra structure development. Marine debris in particular plastic is a big problem, not only in Indonesia, but also around the world. Hence, Indonesia is considered to be the second largest plastic waste producer in the world. Marine debris is part of a broader problem regarding waste management. Solid waste management has become a challenge for public health. In this research, garbage observation was done by adapting the shoreline survey method based on the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA, 2013). The results of observations of the research found that the type of macro-debris and meso-debris collected in the transect of observations were 228 items with a total weight of 2062.32 grams. Plastics debris were found in most quantities followed by rubbers, glasses and metals. The main factor for the abundance of marine debris in the coastal area of Tateli dua village Mandolang subdistrict Minahasa regency was the household waste, indicating that land-based sources provide a key factor for plastic pollution on the coastal area. Keywords: Marine debris, shoreline survey, pollution, coastal environment, Minahasa regency. Pengamatan sampah dilakukan dengan adaptasi metode shoreline survey methodology berdasarkan National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA, 2013). Abstract

Based on the material content, waste is grouped into two types, namely organic waste (waste derived from animal, plant and human parts) and inorganic waste (waste derived from materials such as metal, glass, styrofoam, plastic and rubber). Inorganic waste is one of the coastal pollution problems, yet information about inorganic waste in mangrove ecosystem was relatively low, especially at Lesah Village, Tagulandang Sub district, Sitaro Regency. This study aims to determine the distribution of inorganic waste by type and to analyze the characteristic of inorganic waste based on the amount of size and weight found. The method used in this research is the line transects method at 3 different stations. The results showed that the types of marine debris that found were plastic, rubber, metal, and glass waste and there were 2 characteristics, namely mega-debris and macro-debris. Of the various types of debris obtained, plastic is the most commonly found, 161 items/23.329m2 (69.099 Items/ha) with a total weight of 1357.75 gram/ha and a total size of 1938.93 cm/ha. Followed by rubber debris as many as 5 items/23.329m2 (2.146 items/ha) with a total weight of 159.309 gram/ha and a total size of 59.871 cm/ha. Then, glass debris as many as 4 items/23.329m2 (1.717 items/ha) with a total weight of 402,159 grams/ha a total size of 31.030 cm/ha. Whereas, metal debris is the lowest value found as many as 3 item/23.329m2 (1.288 items/ha) with a total weight of 67.622 gram/ha and a total size of 19.528 cm/ha.Keywords: Inorganic waste, Mangrove Ecosystem, Desa Lesah

Abstract

Inorganic waste refers to waste or refuse generated from various processes, which cannot naturally decompose and generally require a very long time for breakdown. The method used for data collection follows the shoreline survey methodology. The research was conducted along a line transect, with a length of 100 meters and a width of 5 meters on each side, and observers walked along the transect line. The study was carried out over a span of 2 months. The observation transect line began perpendicular to the coastline, covering a length of 100 meters and a width of 5 meters on each side, resulting in an area of 100 x 10. This area was meant to represent the research site. Based on the research findings, the total quantity of inorganic waste collected was 305 pieces per 1000 square meters (3,050 pieces per hectare). The most commonly found type of waste was plastic, with 151 pieces per 1000 square meters (1,510 pieces per hectare), accounting for 49.5%. The research results revealed that the heaviest waste category was glass, weighing 2,793 pieces per 1000 square meters (27,930 pieces per hectare), making up 62.5% of the total.
