Abstract

This study is proposed to analyze conversation analysis, especially for turn-taking strategy in a video of Actors on Actors Conversation by Variety featuring Zendaya and Andrew Garfield. This study used a qualitative method with Stenstrom’s framework to analyze the turn-taking strategy used in the conversation. The process of analysis consists of four steps; streaming Variety’s Actors on Actors Conversation video featuring Zendaya and Andrew Garfield, transcribing the conversation, classifying the data, and interpreting the data. The result of this study showed that turn-taking strategies appear in the conversation. There were starting up, promoting, interrupting, repeating words, taking over, overlapping, appealing, silent pauses, and filled pauses. The most frequent turn-taking strategy used is the overlapping strategy. Therefore, this study suggests that conversation analysis is important for understanding the intent of people's speech. In addition, this study can be used as a reflection on both theoretical and practical contributions. In theory, this study supports the theory of conversation analysis in turn-taking strategies. In fact, teachers can use it as a reference for applied linguistics courses.

Abstract

With the increase in tourism activities post-pandemic, the regional government of Agam Regency considers the urgency of improving the English language skills of local human resources (HR) to prepare them to welcome the arrival of international tourists. Thus, the collaboration between the Agam Regency Regional Government and the Community Service (PkM) team of the English Language Education Study Program was initiated as a sustainable program. This second-year activity aimed at training participants in developing speaking skill materials for elementary school levels. This three-day training involved 20 elementary school teachers around Kampung Inggris in five villages in Agam Regency. The results of the questionnaire and reflection showed that this activity helped improve the participants’ skills in designing creative and effective teaching materials for speaking skills in English at the elementary school level, and they were satisfied with the entire series of events. It is hoped that this activity can enable participants to play their role as facilitators in the English Village in Agam Regency, thereby helping to build better English literacy. === Dengan makin membaiknya dunia pariwisata, pemerintah daerah Kabupaten Agam melihat adanya urgensi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris sumber daya manusia (SDM) setempat agar siap menyambut kembali kedatangan turis internasional. Karena itulah, kerja sama Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten Agam melalui Dinas Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Kabupaten Agam dengan tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) Prodi S1 Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FBS UNJ dibuat sebagai kegiatan multiyears (berkelanjutan). Kegiatan yang merupakan tahun kedua ini bertujuan untuk melatih peserta dalam mengembangkan materi pembelajaran berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris untuk tingkat Sekolah Dasar (SD). Kegiatan yang berlangsung selama tiga hari ini melibatkan 20 guru SD di sekitar Kampung Inggris di lima desa (nagari) di Kabupaten Agam. Hasil angket dan refleksi menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan ini memberikan manfaat dalam membangun kemampuan peserta dalam merancang materi pengajaran kemampuan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris pada tingkat SD yang menarik dan tepat guna, dan mereka puas dengan keseluruhan rangkaian acara. Diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat membantu peserta dalam perannya sebagai fasilitator pada Kampung Inggris di Kabupaten Agam sehingga membantu membangun literasi berbahasa Inggris yang lebih baik.
