Abstract

Literacy is one of the indicators of the nation development. Unfortunately, our people’s literacy is still low and needs to be introduced early to the children. SMP Negeri 2 Sukowono, Jember, also faced the same problem. Their students’ literacy and reading interest were still lacking. Besides, there was not any activtity which accomodate students’ interest in literacy. The community service team proposed a solution to make a Language Literacy Club for this problem. The program was conducted through four steps; preliminary study, planning, implementing, and evaluation. After being implemented to the students, it gained positive responses from both students and teachers. The students enjoyed the activity done in the group so much. Moreover, students’ language ability and confidence increased. Therefore, it can be concluded that the existence of Language Literacy Club is beneficial for the students. Next, an active promotion is needed to attract more students to join this club.

Abstract

One of important aspects of education is related to how this contributes to positive changes on individuals. To do so, communication is always an important part of education especially in shaping students’ characters. This also applies at Islamic boarding schools, widely known as pondok pesantren, in Indonesia. Regarding this matter, kitab kuning which literally translates into the yellow books have been the basis of how to educate santri, students of Islamic boarding schools, to become future individuals with great characters. One of the yellow books learnt at Islamic boarding schools is Ta'lim Mutaallim. This book is one of the obligatory books learnt at Al Qadiri Islamic boarding schools in Jember. This research is a descriptive qualitative research conducted at the Al Qodiri Islamic boarding school in Jember. The results of the study show that there are 7 characters of Islamic perspective of educational communication according to Al Jarnuzi which are conveyed and taught at the Al Qodiri Islamic boarding school in shaping the characteristics of students. Those characters include: 1) the intention to learn, 2) choosing teachers, knowledge, and friends, 3) glorifying knowledge and experts in knowledge, 4) sincerity in seeking knowledge, istiqomah, and noble ideals, 5) trust, 6) wara’, and 7) learning methods

Abstract

Paper pengabdian masyarakat ini melaporkan pelaksanaan program pelatihan Bahasa Inggris berorientasi Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Pelatihan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesiapan siswa Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) dalam menghadapi tes Bahasa Inggris terstandar internasional serta memotivasi dalam pengembangan diri. Sasaran pelatihan adalah siswa-siswi SMK disekitar kampus Politeknik Negeri Jember kelas 11 atau 12. Pelatihan dilakukan bekerja sama dengan Unit Penunjang Akademik (UPA) Bahasa Politeknik Negeri Jember dan beberapa SMK mitra. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi analisis kebutuhan, seleksi peserta, asesmen pre-test dan post-test, serta pelaksanaan pembelajaran berbasis tindakan yang menekankan komunikasi praktis, simulasi, dan proyek kolaboratif sesuai konteks vokasi. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan kompetensi bahasa Inggris peserta pada semua keterampilan serta peningkatan motivasi melanjutkan studi luar negeri dan meraih karir global. Tantangan seperti variasi kemampuan awal dan keterbatasan fasilitas dapat diatasi dengan strategi adaptif dan pendampingan individual. Studi ini menegaskan efektivitas integrasi standar CEFR dengan pembelajaran action-based dalam mempersiapkan siswa SMK menghadapi sertifikasi internasional dan memupuk aspirasi tinggi dalam pendidikan dan karir masa depan.
