Abstract: Although the importancee of teaching and learning English has been widely recognized, many still do not know the best way to optimize the students’ ability in EFL learning. This article attempts to explore effective ways of teaching English by reviewing an article by Illèss and Akcan. In-volving 25 pre-service English teachers in Turkey and nine in Hungary, the researchers recorded their classrooms’ condition and conducted semi-controlled interviews with the teachers to investigate the use of real-life language in their classrooms. It was revealed that the use of real life language in EFL classrooms was beneficial to optimize students ability in EFL learning. In addition, facilitating the use of spontaneus language, providing authentic materials and real-life context, and creating learner-centered process of learning in the classrooms also affirmed the optimization. Key Words: english teaching pedagogy, spontaneous language, authentic teaching, traditional way of teachingAbstrak: Meskipun pentingnya pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris telah dikenal secara luas, dan banyak yang belum memahami cara terbaik untuk mengoptimalkan kemampuan siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Artikel ini menguraikan cara-cara efektif dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris dengan menelaah artikel oleh Illèss dan Akcan. Melibatkan 25 calon guru Bahasa Inggris di Turki dan sembilan di Hongaria, peneliti merekam situasi kelas dan melakukan wawancara semi-terstruktur terhadap mereka. Telaah ini menemukan bahwa penggunaan bahasa yang digunakan secara alami di kelas pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bermanfaat untuk mengoptimalkan kemampuan siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, memfasilitasi penggunaan bahasa secara spontan, menyiapkan materi otentik dan terkait konteks kehidupan nyata, serta menciptakan proses pembelajaran yang berpusat pada siswa juga membantu optimalisasi itu.Kata kunci: pedagogi pengajaran bahasa inggris, bahasa spontan, pengajaran otentik, cara pengajaran tradisional

Strategies to Solve EFL Students’ Problems in Writing Meiga Rahmanita

People nowadays have realized that in learning a language, they also need to master the four language skills, including writing. Second language writing, then, is a necessity to be taught in the schools and universities. Yet, many still consider writing as a complex activity since the writers need to deal with the content, mechanical, and readers’ expectation. That makes EFL students encounter many problems in writing. This article aims to share the strategies in teaching writing to solve students’ problems in writing for all level.

The Students’ Perspectives on Extensive Listening Through YouTube Suyik Binarkaheni; Titik Ismailia; Meiga Rahmanita

The paper reports a case study method exploring the perceptions of 10 students enrolling a listening class in terms of their experience when taking extensive listening, primarily by using YouTube. A closed-ended questionnaire was delivered and FGD through a semi-structured interview was utilized as a datacollecting method. The results of exploring the students’ perspectives indicated that: (1) they can do extensive listening via YouTube to improve their listening fluency anytime and anywhere; (2) they can learn the pronunciation of new vocabulary and grammar through extensive listening; (3) they can pertain the topic of aural text from context; (4) the speed change function and the subtitle function is occasionally used to solve their confusion on new phrases; (5) some commercials may be as information to support their English learning; (6) they find an unreliable or unstable internet connection in some cases. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers set the teaching and learning activities and environment that can encourage students to experience extensive listening. Besides, it is also suggested that the institution management provide good Internet accessibility in the teaching and learning environment.

Kelor Tourism Village is a tourism destination that is well-developed in Sleman Regency. This study aimed to analyze the forms of community participation in developing Kelor Tourism Village as a tourism destination. Qualitative descriptive method was used to describe the phenomena in the research object by using observation, interviews, and documentation to collect the data. This study showed the form of community participation in Kelor Tourism Village which consisted of two types: direct and indirect participation. The direct participation could be seen in the participation of the villagers, which included providers of tourist attractions, homestay providers, and the managers of Pokdarwis, in making decisions in every stage of the development of the tourist village. Meanwhile, the form of indirect participation carried out by the villagers was the participation in investing the operational costs of the tourism village. These participation forms have been solidly built since the beginning of their formation until now. The administrators’ enthusiasm in encouraging the community was a factor to grow their sense of ownership. Strong participation among the community also made Kelor Tourism Village economically independent and sustainable.

SMP 14 is one of the state junior high schools in Jember that has conducted learning process using 2013 curriculum. This school has various sports and arts extracurricular activities but it does not have Engliah language extracurricular or English tutoring yet. The absence of learning methods with English tutoring and extracurriculars makes the ability in speaking skills unable to contribute to school achievement. Based on this problem, the Polije (Politeknik Negeri Jember) community service team provides English speaking skill training to improve students’ knowledge and skill by using drama technique. The implementation method includes conducting preliminary studies, carrying out speaking skill training with drama technique with the stages: introduction of drama media in speaking skill learning, viewing some examples of the usage of drama in learning English, mentoring speaking skill training through drama scripts, and evaluation of training by asking students to perform drama. The targets and outcomactivity video, one article published in accredited community service journal, and improvement of English speaking skill for SMP 14 Jember students. Based the results and evaluation, there was an increase in students’ speaking skill when they perform drama at the end of the training. In addition, students are able to increase self-confudence by demonstrating these abilities in front of friends and teachers. Thus, the drama technique for learning English especially for speaking skill.SMP 14 sebagai salah satu SMP negeri di Jember telah melakukan pembelajaran menggunakan kurikulum 2013 dan berbagai kegiatan ekstrakurikuler olagraga dan seni tetapi belum memiliki kegiatan ekstrakurikuler bahasa Inggris maupun bimbel bahasa Inggris. Belum adanya metode pembelajaran dengan bimbingan belajar maupun ekstrakurikuler bahasa Inggris menjadikan kemampuan dalam keterampilan berbicara belum dapat memberikan kontribusi prestasi untuk sekolah. Dengan adanya masalah tersebut, tim pengabdian masyarakat Polije (Politeklnik Negeri jember) memberikan pelatihan keterampilan berbicara (speaking) bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan siswa menggunakan teknik drama. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi mengadakan studi pendahuluan, melaksanakan pelatihan keterampilan berbicara dengan teknik drama dengan tahapan: pengenalan media drama dalam keterampilan berbicara, melihat contoh-contoh penggunaan media drama dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, pendampingan pelatihan keterampilan berbicara melalui skrip drama yang telah disiapkan, dan evaluasi pelatihan dengan meminta siswa melakukan pertunjukan drama yang telah di dilatihkan. Target dan luaran yang akan dicapai meliputi 3 luaran wajib yaitu: satu artikel pada media massa cetak/elektronik, video kegiatan, satu artikel yang dimuat dalam jurnal pengabdian masyarakat terakreditasi, dan peningkatan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa SMP 14 Jember. Berdasarkan hasil dan evaluasi terdapat peningkatan keterampilan berbicara (speaking) pada siswa pada saat melakukan penampilan drama di akhir pelatihan. Selain itu siswa mampu meningkatkan rasa percaya diri dengan menunjukkan kemampuannya tersebut di depan teman-teman dan guru. Dengan demikian teknik drama dapat menjadi alternatif teknik pembalajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya untuk keterampilan berbicara (speaking).

There have been several ICT platforms used in assessment, one of which is ProProfs. The use of Proprofs, however, has not been widely known compared to other platforms, such as Quizziz and Kahoot!. This research attempted to find out the students’ perception towards the use of ProProfs in doing exercise in their Intermediate English Class. This was qualitative research, which used questionnaires and interviews to collect the data. The subjects were 127 students of Politeknik Negeri Jember, majoring in Management of Agroindustry. The result showed that most students think that having quizzes using ProProfs were interesting and challenging, and thus, made ProProfs become one of the assessment tools in class that is worth implementing. However, further research still needs to be done to explore the use of ProProfs in all levels of education.

Literacy is one of the indicators of the nation development. Unfortunately, our people’s literacy is still low and needs to be introduced early to the children. SMP Negeri 2 Sukowono, Jember, also faced the same problem. Their students’ literacy and reading interest were still lacking. Besides, there was not any activtity which accomodate students’ interest in literacy. The community service team proposed a solution to make a Language Literacy Club for this problem. The program was conducted through four steps; preliminary study, planning, implementing, and evaluation. After being implemented to the students, it gained positive responses from both students and teachers. The students enjoyed the activity done in the group so much. Moreover, students’ language ability and confidence increased. Therefore, it can be concluded that the existence of Language Literacy Club is beneficial for the students. Next, an active promotion is needed to attract more students to join this club.

Wirausaha merupakan salah satu cara penanggulangan kesenjangan social dan kemiskinan. Banyaknya pengangguran pada usia produktif menuntut adanya tindakan yang kreatif dan inovatif. Salah satu indikator bangsa menjadi negara maju adalah memiliki entrepreneurship 2%. Indonesia hanya memiliki 0,24% sampai saat ini. Di era globalisasi ini membangun manusia yang handal, unggul, dan responsive merupakan salah satu cara untuk menghadapi tantangan global. Hal ini dilakukan agar tetap mampu bersaing dengan pasar global yang berbasis hoby dan potensi yang ada dilingkungan masing – masing. Salah satu komunitas yang memiliki banyak usia produktif adalah santri di pondok pesantren. Santri harus dilatih dengan kemampuan entrepreneurship agar mampu bersaing di era globalisasi ini. Salah satu cara membangun manusia yang handal adalah dengan memberikan pelatihan yang berbasis potensi alam yang ada di wilayah sekitar. Tujuan pengabdian ini adalah untuk memecahkan masalah mitra yaitu membangun pemikiran wirausaha kepada santri dan juga memanfaatkan potensi yang ada di sekitar mitra pengabdian. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dengan metode analisis, design, development, implementasi, dan evaluasi. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah melaksanakan kegiatan pelatihan yang sinergi yaitu pelatihan kewirausahaan, pengolahan limbah alam, dan pelatihan digital marketing. Hasil dari pelatihan ini adalah membangitkan semangat wirausaha kepada para santri dengan melatih meningkatkan potensi alam menjadi komoditas yang bernilai dan mampu untuk dijual di pasar global melalui media digital. Setelah dilaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian para santri memiliki keinginan untuk menjadi wirausaha. Selain itu, mitra pengabdian juga bisa memanfaatkan potensi limbah alam yang ada di sekitar pondok pesantren untuk menjadi barang yang memiliki nilai ekonomi. The inspiration for this study is to use various teaching techniques in acquiring English vocabulary to avoid monotonous activities that make students bored and not interested in learning. Teachers can use miming games as a teaching technique to make the learning process in the classroom more fun and easier to understand. Miming games also allow students to acquire vocabulary to easily remember and understand a word. The focus of this research is 1) the use of miming game to acquire English vocabulary, and 2) student responses about the use of miming game to acquire English vocabulary. This study used qualitative methods, with data collection techniques used such as observation, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The data was analyzed and then triangulated for the inferences. The results of this study shows that, as based on the observations in the field notes, the students enjoyed the learning process and easily memorized the new vocabulary. In addition, they also felt interested, happy, enjoyable, and the learning process was efficient for acquiring the vocabulary by miming game.

High-quality service is the key to a business process because it can build two important things: customer trust and loyalty. Prioritizing customer experience is a valuable investment in today's business world. UPT Destinasi Wisata Terpadu Kabupaten Jember is a work unit that is responsible for managing several tourist destinations. Based on the preliminary study conducted by the community service team, there are 2 problems: the culture of excellent service and the English skills of operational staff at UPT Destinasi Wisata Terpadu are not satisfactory yet. Therefore, the team tried to improve the competence of the operational staff at UPT Destinasi Wisata Terpadu through the Service Excellence and English for Front Office Training. The Service Excellence and English for Front Office Training aimed to improve the operational staff’s customer service and English skills, especially the front office staff. This training will equip the participants with the basic principles of service excellence, effective communication techniques, and strategies for professionally handling complaints. Thus, the participants are not only able to provide satisfactory service, but can also communicate confidently in English.
