Abstract

This community service aims to introduce English using traditional games for elementary and middle school children in Yahim Village, Jayapura Regency, where many traditional games passed down from generation that must be maintained and preserved. With the declaration of several villages in Jayapura Regency as leading tourism destinations in Papua by the Regional Government, the introduction and mastery of English has become increasingly important, as well as the love and pride of it. This activity uses the lecture method and the participation of lecturers and students in informal learning at the Rumah Baca Cybel Yahim, followed by playing together while pronouncing several target vocabulary words. This activity was carried out for one month starting from drafting, selecting, and combining traditional games into 3 learning activities. Observations of participants’ responses, enthusiasm, and ability to understand the material and produce target vocabulary, recording pictures and videos, as well as casual interviews with participants were used to analyze the implementation and results obtained. The results of implementing this activity show that almost all participants (80%) stated that learning English using traditional games was very fun and helped them understand the meaning, and how to read, pronounce, and write it. Abstrak Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris menggunakan permainan tradisional bagi anak-anak di tingkat SD dan SMP di Kampung Yahim, Kabupaten Jayapura, mengingat Kampung ini memiliki banyak permainan tradisional yang diturunkan dari generasi ke generasi yang harus dijaga dan dilestarikan. Dengan telah dicanangkannya beberapa kampung di Kabupaten Jayapura sebagai destinasi pariwisata unggulan di Papua oleh Pemerintah Daerah, pengenalan dan penguasaan bahasa Inggris menjadi semakin penting, sekaligus mencintai dan bangga akan permainan tradisionalnya sendiri. Kegiatan ini menggunakan metode ceramah dan partisipasi dosen dan mahasiswa dalam bentuk pembelajaran informal di Rumah Baca ‘Cybel,’ Yahim, Kabupaten Jayapura, Papua, yang dilanjutkan dengan bermain besama sambil mengucapkan beberapa kosakata yang menjadi target pembelajaran sebelumnya. Kegiatan ini dilakukan selama satu bulan dimulai dari penyusunan, pemilihan materi ajar, dan bagaimana memadukan permainan tradisional dalam 3 kali kegiatan pembelajaran. Pengamatan akan respon, antusiasme, dan kemampuan peserta dalam memahami materi dan memproduksi kosakata target, perekaman gambar dan video, juga wawancara santai bersama peserta digunakan untuk menganalisis pelaksanaan dan hasil yang diperoleh. Hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan ini memperlihatkan bahwa hampir semua peserta (80%) menyatakan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menggunakan permainan tradisional sangat menyenangkan dan membantu memahami arti, cara membaca, mengucapkan, dan menuliskannya.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to introduce through the use of traditional games modified to suit the characteristics of elementary school children, where play is essentially a child’s world while the development of technological innovation encourages children to play individually or interact less with others and their enviroment. In addition, this community service activity also aims to increase love and pride in traditional games that have cultural content and local wisdom and also have the potential to improve children’s critical thinking skills, because traditional games have been played for generations and always create a sense of unity and beautiful memories until someone is an adult. This community service activities were carried out at SD Negeri Inpres Perumnas IV, located in a residential complex in Heram District, Jayapura city, with 275 students (150 boys and 125 girls) and 12 study groups, located in a land area of 1,551 M2 flanked by residential areas, the GKI Kanaan church, a mosque, and a community health center, making the play space quite narrow for the students. The activity began with an explanation of the origins of the traditional Papuan game oro kino-kino combined with the Simon Says game, followed by an explanation of how to play, cultural values, demonstrations of game modifications, and play sessions.  The results obtained showed that students were motivated to learn and master English, proud to have fun traditional games and can learn while playing and critically determine several English statements to do and not to do, teacherswere motivated to develop more fun and meaningful learning such as using traditional games in their teaching and learning classess of English.
