Abstract

This research delves into the intricate layers of Amma Crellin's character in Gillian Flynn's "Sharp Objects'' through the lens of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory. By employing Freud's framework, this research embarks on a psychological journey, exploring the labyrinth of her subconscious, desires, and inner conflicts. The exploration encompasses the realms of consciousness and unconsciousness, delves into the dynamics of the id, ego, and superego, scrutinizes the manifestations of anxiety, and examines the utilization of self defense mechanisms as they intertwine with Amma's character. The choice to apply psychoanalysis to Amma's character is deliberate and well-suited to her complexities. Psychoanalysis offers a profound understanding of her psyche, allowing us to peel back the layers of her consciousness, navigate the corridors of her mind, and shed light on the anxieties that torment her. By dissecting her neurotic, moral, and realistic anxieties, we bridge the chasm between her inner world and external actions, underscoring the enduring relevance of Freud's psychoanalysis in comprehending her character. The methodology relies on a qualitative approach, emphasizing descriptive research. Data exclusively originates from Gillian Flynn's "Sharp Objects," with reading and close reading techniques as our primary tools. In summary, this research embarks on an explicit and detailed quest to unearth the intricacies of Amma's hidden desires and dark secrets. Through this exploration, it forges a compelling link between literature and psychology, emphasizing the timelessness of the human mind, both within the pages of novels and in real life. Keywords: Anxiety; Consciousness; Ego; Id; Self-defense mechanism; Superego; Psychoanalysis; Unconsciousness
