Abstract

The recent phenomena of religious based violence and terrorism in Indonesia shows that the target recruits of fundamentalist groups and institution members are students from higher education (Saragih, 2011). English language classrooms are in fact potential as peace agency as the teachers  are in a strategic position to influence infrastructure, to invest in their social capital and to construct moral imagination (Anderson 1991, Birch 2009) as language is not a mere means of communication, but it is more a means to construct realities. In response to today’s need for a peaceful environment in Indonesia, English teachers must be aware and be proactive agents to promote a more dialogic atmosphere in their classrooms. This paper will discuss how Prose class with peace-based language learning perspective made use of Richard Oh’s Novel “The Pathfinders of Love.” The story is a meaningful material to encourage students’ self-awareness as a part of the diversed society and to promote dialogic relation among themselves. The paper will first provide a detailed description of the class participants and their different background, then outline  a brief analysis of the issues of conflict and peace in the story, and present an elaborate discussion of how the in-class and out-class activities promote a deeper understanding of what peace means in a multicultural environment. Keywords:      multicultural literature, peace-based language teaching, EFL teacher education

Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) theory, specifically the three metafunction framework by Kress and van Leeuwen (2021) was used to analyze the semiotic resources presented in Dahmer series, including dialogues, visual images, and gestures, to understand how these resources were interrelated in constructing the representation of black people in that series. Data was taken from the 10 episodes of the series. This research found four themes of black people representation. First was the stereotypical portrait of blacks as the poor and less educated than the sufficient whites. Second was the portrayal of discriminative treatment toward black people that strongly shown in the series. Third was how the colored people responded to the discrimination by speaking up for their rights. The series magnified the significance of the blacks and their fights for justice. Lastly was the holistic fights of the blacks for their rights became evident in the portrayal of the important figure to support the justice seeking. The series also highlighted the sustainable racial justice. In other words, the series had an intention to voice up the necessity of unity and mutual support in the society for preserving justice.

Abstract

The main focus is on the artistic aspects of the two female characters, Emma Carew and Lucy Harris in the production of “The Musical Jekyll & Hyde” by the Annual Drama team of Faculty of Language and Arts, Satya Wacana Christian University Salatiga, in 2023. The study focused on the process and artistic decision making within the context of management, musicology, dramaturgy, and literary studies. The study highlights how Emma and Lucy, are constructed in feminism artistic analysis in contemporary drama. The characters represented female with their domestic and private roles. Observation, interviews, documentation, and library studies were conducted to gather the data. Using performance centered approach, the study thoroughly observed the artistic decision process of the three actors of performance quadrilogue, namely the source, producer, and performer. As a college theater, all the artistic decision was made by the students. The four artistic elements of theater production, comprising the verbal text, song, movement, and scenary, portrayed the story’s setting in the 1800s in England. Emma’s verbal text depicted the English women of the elite with their domestic orientation. On the contrary, Lucy portrayed liberal English women. The four artistic elements in a theater production, referred to Broadway theater of the same title. This study positioned artistic elements as its study object instead of drama as a media of English learning. These two domains are discussed to sharpen on the construction of the female figure in the artistic perspective of feminist analysis. Post-production studies are also conducted to examine how students gain experience of an artistic decision-making process in producing a performance. It was conducted through the management’s delegating mechanism in the chart of the structured organization.
