Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Sand-textured soil such as coastal makes it easier for microplastics to migrate over longer distances. Kalimalang Hamlet, a coastal area, has a sandy soil texture and most of its people consume untreated dug well water. This condition if it occurs in the long term can cause health problems, such as oxidative stress, metabolic changes, immune dysfunction, and cancer. This study is aimed at analyzing the content, abundance, and causative factors of microplastics in the well water of the community of Kalimalang Hamlet. Methods: This study is a quantitative-research with a descriptive method. Thirty samples of people who consumed water were selected by accidental sampling. Ten wells location was determined using cluster random sampling followed by proportional random sampling. Data analysis used was univariate with crosstab. Results and Discussion: The results showed that 10 dug wells were polluted with microplastics with a total of 188 particles with a size of 0.13-7.24 mm and identified forms of fibers, fragments, filaments. It is estimated that there are 235 microplastic particles per day consumed by the community through dug well water. Well depth, floor, sewerage, and distance from the waste management site have the potential to increase the abundance of microplastics. Conclusion: The distance of the dug well from the sea was not a major factor. This shows the need to implement plastic waste management such as 3R, boiling, and multistage filtration in the dug well water that will be consumed.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a major public health challenge globally, with coastal communities facing unique vulnerabilities due to limited health infrastructure, low health literacy, and socio-economic constraints. This study aims to develop a community-based epidemiological management model for hypertension in coastal areas by analyzing the structural relationships among sociodemographic factors, risk behaviors, hypertension history, and healthcare access. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 128 coastal residents in Puger Subdistrict, Jember, Indonesia. The study applied Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to explore causal pathways. The findings reveal that gender and education significantly influence risk behaviors, which in turn affect blood pressure grades and hypertension management. Despite a high prevalence of uncontrolled blood pressure, awareness and health-seeking behavior remain low. The structural model highlights the importance of behaviorally focused interventions targeting high-risk groups, particularly males and individuals with low education levels. The study underscores the need for community-based strategies that integrate risk-based management, health education, and culturally sensitive follow-up systems. This model offers a practical and contextual approach to strengthening hypertension control in underserved coastal populations

Abstract

Background: There was an increase in the number of elderly people by 8.1% in 2019 compared to 2018 (Indonesian Ministry of Health, 2019).  The increasing number of elderly people in Indonesia will cause health and welfare problems, especially related to personal hygienePurpose: This study aims to analyze the determinants of personal hygiene behavior in the elderly at UPT PSTW Jember by utilizing the ABCD concept (Asset Based Community Development which is also reviewed from the behavior of the elderly and assets owned by UPT Tresna Werdha Jember Social ServicesMethod: The design of this study was analytic observational with a population of 140 elderly people and a sample size of 58 elderly people taken using systematic smpling techniquesResult: The results showed that knowledge, attitudes, social assets, facilities and infrastructure and health information / training had an influence on personal hygiene behavior in the elderly at UPT PSTW Jember. The Odds Ratio value of 13.074 means that social assets have the opportunity to influence personal hygiene behavior 13.074 times compared to the variables of knowledge and infrastructureConclusion: The dominant factor that has the most influence on the personal hygiene behavior of the elderly at UPT PSTW Jember is social assets.
