Abstract

This research aims to explore the level of student engagement in English language learning (ELL) in an Islamic boarding school, utilizing a phenomenological research methodology. The study's primary objectives are: firstly, to understand how students subjectively interpret and experience their engagement in ELL activities within the boarding school setting; secondly to analyze the contextual factors present in the Islamic school environment that students believe impact their engagement; and finally, to examine how students perceive the harmony or potential discord between the teaching and learning of English and their religious and cultural beliefs. The results of the study have been divided into three main themes: students' perspectives on engagement in the ELL, contextual factors in the educational environment, and perceptions of harmony/discord between ELL and religious beliefs. These findings highlight the complex linguistic dynamics that exist within pesantren settings, emphasizing the need for tailored pedagogical strategies to be formulated and implemented. This discussion emphasizes the necessity for a thorough investigation that takes into account the perspectives of different stakeholders and the specific contexts of institutions to understand the intricacies of the language learning process in the distinct setting of pesantren. This research project has the potential to make a significant contribution towards the development of culturally sensitive and inclusive language learning environments.

Abstract

This research project intends to engage with the perspectives of ’shadow teachers’ who perform private tutoring sessions in Indonesia, focusing on a gap in the literature concerning the construction and execution of English learning programs within informal education settings. Existing studies have explored individualized instruction within formal classroom contexts. However, scant attention has been directed towards the role of shadow teachers with regard to curriculum development beyond the conventional school system. This study hopes to address some of these gaps by drawing upon the practical wisdom of these educators to reveal the complexities, collaborations, and tailored English Language learning program designing as well as the bespoke decision-making processes which occur within non-standardized educational settings.

Abstract

The integration of English language pedagogy in Islamic boarding schools serves several purposes. This study aims to explore how ideological perspectives on English intersect with religious and cultural norms within Islamic educational settings, examining challenges such as reconciling Islamic doctrines with Western influences and integrating religious values into language learning. The researcher employed a qualitative methodology to capture the profoundness and intricacy of the participants' experiences, beliefs, and practices pertaining to English language learning in Islamic schools. The research methodology encompassed a purposive sampling technique to select participants. A semi-structured interview model was utilized to explore the information provided. The researchers organized the results obtained from the interview data into three main themes: Managing the intersection of language, culture, and faith; addressing obstacles linked to integrating faith into the educational journey; and adapting approaches for different stages of boarding school education. The results shed light on the diverse tactics employed by students to navigate the educational landscape with sensitivity and discernment, creating an inclusive learning environment that supports the overall development of students. Furthermore, the integration of Islamic principles and cultural heritage played a crucial role in enhancing linguistic fluency and strengthening religious identity among students.
