Abstract

This study looked into the types of comprehension-related reading issues that fourth-grade kids faced, the factors that influence reading difficulties, and the efforts made by these students, who were between the ages of 11 and 12, to overcome their reading difficulties. The study used a qualitative method to try to understand the reading challenges of English as a foreign language. Twenty-two fourth-graders served as the research subjects. Questionnaires, documentation, and interviews were employed in the data collection process. Qualitative data analysis was the method employed. The study's findings showed that 15 students had trouble reading and that they had trouble understanding English reading texts when they were given by their teachers. Fourth-grade pupils' difficulties reading English was caused by an internal factor: they were less motivated to learn English in class and had a smaller vocabulary. Regarding the external component, the school library contained no references to English-reading books. It is evident from the previous results that fourth-grade elementary school kids struggle with reading.

Abstract

This research aimed at (i) designing effective teaching materials based on students book to support the Merdeka Curriculum; (ii) assessing the validity level of the designed teaching materials; and (iii) determining the effectiveness of the materials in improving third-grade students reading skill. This research employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The ADDIE model was employed, focusing on the analysis, design, development, and implementation stages. The research subjects were 21 third-grade students of SDN 1 Tamanbali. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and pre-test and post-test instruments. The qualitative data were analyzed using coding and thematic analysis, while the quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that the existing student book lacked sufficient content and engagement to support reading skill development. Based on the needs analysis, the researcher developed teaching materials entitled My First English Reading Journey, Consisting of three units with reading texts, vocabulary, illustrations, and comprehension tasks. Expert validation confirmed the materials were valid in terms of content, language, and media design. Implementation of the materials led to a significant improvement in students reading skills, as indicated by increased post-test scores and positive feedback from students and the teacher. It was concluded that well-designed student book-based teaching materials can effectively enhance reading skills and support the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in primary schools.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop effective vocabulary learning materials for second-grade students at an elementary school using the ADDIE instructional design model. The development process followed the five stages of ADDIE: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. This Research and Development (RD) study focused on identifying students' needs in vocabulary acquisition and addressing the challenges observed in existing materials. The analysis phase identified low engagement, poor retention, and lack of contextual understanding among students. Based on these findings, the materials were designed to be interactive, visually engaging, and contextually relevant. Two units were developed: "The Elephant Is Big" and "The Giraffe Is Tall." The materials were implemented in a classroom setting and evaluated through pre- and post-tests, as well as expert validation. The results showed a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery among students, along with positive feedback from teachers and learners. This study concludes that the ADDIE model is a practical framework for developing instructional materials tailored to young learners needs in vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effectiveness of using audiovisual media in improving the English language skills of DIV Hotel Management students. The research method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design. The research sample consists of two classes of students, namely an experimental class that uses audiovisual media and a control class that uses conventional methods. The research instrument used was an English language proficiency test (pre-test and post-test) covering aspects of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Data were analyzed using a t-test to determine significant differences between the two groups. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the English language skills of students in the experimental class and the control class after being treated. Students who learned with audiovisual media showed a higher increase in English language skills compared to students who learned with conventional methods. Audiovisual media proved effective in increasing learning motivation, understanding of material, and English language practice skills of students. This research recommends that the use of audiovisual media be integrated into English language learning in the Hotel Management study program to improve the quality of graduates who are ready to compete in the global industry. Further research can develop more innovative and relevant audiovisual media to the needs of the hospitality industry.
