Abstract

This research examines the effect of the implementation and implication of English as Medium of Instruction in Indonesian higher education institutions. It further examines the impact of EMI on educational outcomes, cultural identification, and the linguistic future. The study assumes both the positive and negative significance of the above measures. Following the qualitative methodology, the case study conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 participants, including 15 faculty members and 15 students, from three diverse universities in Indonesia. The diverse perspectives demonstrate both the positive and negative impacts of EMI. While the research finds a positive correlation between EMI implementation and English proficiency, as well as better global engagement, the study also exposes such hindrances to the EMI as the language proficiency barriers and the issues of cultural displacement and lack of equity. Apart from that, the fears related to the erosion of Bahasa Indonesia and the local identity are also due to the friction between culture preservation in globalization integration. As a result, the policy recommendations are developed with the idea to propose the measures of the transition to the EMI, which does not replace the national educational practices and values.

Abstract

This study aims to explore curriculum innovation in language teaching, focusing on the integration of language development and academic content, and to assess its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes. The research employs a literature review method, analyzing various academic sources that discuss curriculum innovation in language teaching. These sources include peer-reviewed articles that focus on issues related to curriculum design, language integration, and cultural considerations. The findings of the study indicate that an integrated approach that combines language development with academic content can enhance student engagement and overall learning outcomes. The integration of culture into the curriculum is also found to be crucial for building linguistic and cultural awareness among students. However, implementing curriculum changes requires careful planning and ongoing support for educators and students. The study emphasizes the need for a balance between innovation and stability in language teaching to ensure that the changes made genuinely improve the student learning experience and prepare them for the challenges of an increasingly complex world.

Abstract

The relationship between Islam, culture, and attitudes towards gender roles in Indonesian society is a complex and dynamic phenomenon that requires a nuanced and interdisciplinary approach to be fully understood. This study aims to explore the interplay between Islamic teachings, cultural values, and attitudes towards gender roles in Indonesia through an interpretive case study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 20 participants, including religious leaders, scholars, activists, and members of the general public. Documentary sources such as religious texts, academic journals, and news articles were also analyzed. The collected data was analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, and the findings were synthesized and interpreted to provide answers to the research questions. The study reveals that the relationship between Islamic teachings, cultural values, and attitudes towards gender roles in Indonesia is complex and multifaceted. Islamic teachings emphasize modesty, respect for elders, and traditional gender roles, significantly shaping attitudes towards gender equality and women's roles in society. However, local cultural beliefs and practices with strong patriarchal underpinnings also reinforce gender inequalities. This dynamic interplay between Islam and culture requires a nuanced and interdisciplinary approach to be fully understood. The study underscores the importance of understanding how religion, culture, and gender roles shape societal attitudes and values. It also highlights the need for further research to deepen the understanding of Indonesia's social, cultural, and religious dynamics and their impact on women's positions in society.

Abstract

This study utilizes a qualitative research methodology, relying on interpretive analysis to explore existential themes in Elif Shafak’s The Island of Missing Trees. Framed through the lens of Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist philosophy, particularly his concept of consciousness of being. The research investigates how characters like Ada, Kostas, and Meryem confront their existence, make choices, and navigate the tension between being and belonging. Drawing on Barnet and Cain’s model of textual analysis, the study incorporates close reading, character development, thematic interpretation, symbolism, and narrative structure to reveal how the novel articulates Sartrean ideas of freedom, responsibility, and self-definition. The analysis highlights how Shafak gives voice to the characters’ internal struggle with identity and displacement, portraying consciousness not as a fixed state, but as a continuous process of becoming. Ultimately, the study demonstrates how literature becomes a vessel for existential inquiry, transforming abstract philosophical ideas into lived emotional realities.
