Abstract

In order to prevent marine pollution on board a motor ship, this study examines how the Garbage Management Plan (GMP) has been implemented. This study analyzes the elements that influence the success of GMP, such as regulatory requirements, crew training and awareness, availability of infrastructure and resources, monitoring, and law enforcement. This is done through examining the implementation and impact of GMP. Methods of literature study, questionnaires, interviews, and qualitative analysis were used in this study. The findings of this study show how important GMP implementation is in minimizing marine pollution. The success of GMP is greatly influenced by adherence to clear and stringent regulatory standards. Successful implementation also depends on crew training and awareness. In addition, the effectiveness of GMP in motor ships depends on the availability of adequate infrastructure and resources. Preventing marine pollution has a positive impact with effective GMP monitoring and enforcement.

Abstract

The current work aims to explore the elements leading to delays in bulk cargo hold preparation and to identify the efforts that can be made to overcome these obstacles on MV. Noah Asyera. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were obtained through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation during sea practice. The analysis method used is the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results indicate that cargo hold preparation was hindered by three main factors: human factors (weak supervision by watch officers, lack of crew coordination, and limited technical skills), equipment factors (damaged nozzles, brooms, shovels, and suboptimal bilge pumps), and material factors (the sticky and abrasive nature of Copper concentrate residue and residual seawater in the bilge). The impacts of these obstacles include cargo holds being declared unfit during surveyor inspection, loading process delays, increased operational costs, and disrupted voyage schedules. The efforts undertaken to overcome these obstacles include enhanced supervision, conducting toolbox meetings, using submersible pumps as alternatives, regular equipment maintenance, implementing efficient cleaning methods, and crew competency training. Consistent implementation of Standard Operational Procedures (SOP) prevents loading delays and maintains compliance with the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code standards.

Abstract

This study analyzes the navigational competence of watchkeeping officers in enhancing maritime safety on board MV. Sophia, focusing on a Global Positioning System (GPS) disturbance that occurred during rainfall on 3 December 2024 while the vessel was sailing in waters near Dubai. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach was employed. Data were obtained through direct observation, structured interviews with the Chief, Second, and Third Officers, and documentation review. The findings show that the GPS disturbance produced unstable and inaccurate position readings for approximately one hour during each of two separate rainfall periods, yet the watchkeeping officers maintained safe navigation by cross-checking position data using radar, ECDIS, AIS, and visual observation, consistent with the principles set out in SOLAS Chapter V and STCW 1978 as amended. The study concludes that navigational competence, particularly the ability to avoid dependence on a single instrument, plays a decisive role in preventing maritime accidents during electronic navigation system disturbances. Continued training in cross-checking procedures and a stronger understanding of equipment limitations are recommended.

Abstract

This study aiims to ainailyze the compliaince of the response to ai coail cairgo fire on the MV CM Laiurenciai with internaitionail saifety regulaitions, specificailly SOLAIS 1974. The reseairch method used wais descriptive quaintitaitive, with daitai collected through direct observaition aind the distribution of questionnaiires to the entire ship’s crew. Daitai ainailysis wais conducted through ai series of staitisticail tests. The vailidity test showed thait aill survey items were vailid, with correlaition vailues aibove the taible-specified r vailue. The reliaibility test using Cronbaich’s AIlphai yielded ai vailue > 0.70, indicaiting thait the instrument wais consistent. The normaility test showed thait the daitai were normailly distributed, while the lineairity test indicaited ai significaint lineair relaitionship between the independent aind dependent vairiaibles. Furthermore, the t-test confirmed thait the crew’s level of understainding regairding cairgo fire response remaiins below the estaiblished staindaird, aind the r-test (correlaition/regression) reveailed ai strong positive relaitionship between the conduct of fire drills aind the crew’s prepairedness. The results of the study confirm thait fire drills on the MV CM Laiurenciai haive not been conducted routinely in aiccordaince with the provisions of SOLAIS 1974. Therefore, this study recommends increasing crew motivation, adjusting the drill schedule to accommodate port calls and berthing times, and strengthening discipline in conducting fire drills so that the crew’s preparedness to respond to a cargo fire can be optimized.

Abstract

Fire safety is a critical component of maritime operations, particularly in preventing and controlling onboard fire incidents that may endanger crew, cargo, and vessel integrity. One of the primary tools used during the initial stage of firefighting is the portable fire extinguisher (PFE), although its effectiveness depends heavily on proper maintenance and operational readiness. This study analyzes constraints in PFE maintenance onboard MV. HMT Fortune and evaluates their implications for ship safety, using a qualitative approach through observation and interviews with the Master and Third Officer. The findings show that although PFE availability is adequate, several issues persist, including damaged seals, reduced pressure, outdated inspection labels, poor cleanliness, and improper placement, alongside limited port time, suboptimal documentation, and insufficient crew training. These constraints are categorized into technical, operational, managerial, and human factors. Shipping companies are recommended to strengthen maintenance systems, documentation, and crew training to comply with international safety standards Keywords: Maritime Safety, Portable Fire Extinguishers, Maintenance, Fire Prevention, Vessel Safety
