Abstract

People with Mental Disorders (ODGJ) are a marginalized group who often receive inhumane treatment, are discriminated against, abandoned and become victims of violence. This article explores the pastoral care carried out by the Kamilian Order in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara Province towards the ODGJ group from 2016 to 2023 and reflects on this work in the light of the Gospel of John 4:1-42. The method used is qualitative. Field data was obtained through interviews and participatory observation. The results of the research found that the Kamilian Order had implemented four superior routine programs, namely: 1) conducting professional searches and data collection on ODGJ, 2) building communication and education with patients and their families, 3) providing spiritual services, and 4) building safe houses free of shackles. Through this work, the Kamilian Order has presented a Christ who cares for and saves the small and marginalized, as is the message of the Gospel of John 4:1-42. This research concludes that the Kamilian Order has a significant concern and pastoral role in humanizing ODGJ in Sikka, NTT and realizing the gospel of liberation for marginalized people.

Abstract

Shackling is still often used as a solution to address issues affecting people with mental disorders (PMD) in Sikka Regency. This study aims to discuss and explain the reality of shackling of PMD in Sikka Regency as a practice of ‘culture of throwing away’ based on the principles outlined in the Encyclical Fratelli Tutti. This research uses a mixed method. The research result shows that people with mental disorders (PMD) are one of the groups that are vulnerable to becoming victims of the culture of throwing away. The manifestation of the culture of throwing away towards the PMD can be seen in the act of shackling. The Encyclical Fratelli Tutti emphatically emphasizes the inherent dignity of every individual and demands full respect for the dignity of all people, including the most vulnerable. According to the Encyclical Fratelli Tutti, the shackling of PMD constitutes an act of violence that tarnishes the sanctity of life and violates human rights. It also manifests egoism and individualism. The shackling of PMD also leads to the breakdown of the family’s proximity relationship. The solution to facing the globalization of indifference, according to Pope Francis, is repentance by living a culture of solidarity, like the example of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Thus, the practice of shackling  PMD in Sikka Regency reflects the ‘culture of throwing away’ criticized by the Encyclical Fratelli Tutti, which emphasizes the importance of respect for human dignity.

Abstract

This study aims to know, explain, and explore the understanding of the Catholic patients and their families at the Local Government Hospital (LGH) of dr. T. C. Hillers Maumere about the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick (SAS) and its relevance to their willingness to receive the ministry of SAS for the patients. This study is a qualitative study with a case study approach. The data collection method uses observation, interview, and literature study techniques. The results of observation and interview show that Catholic patients and their families have a diverse understanding of SAS. These diverse understandings have relevance to their willingness to receive the ministry of SAS for patients. A good understanding of SAS will have a great effect on the willingness to receive the ministry of SAS for the patients or sick people who have begun to be in mortal danger. The pastoral step that can be taken is the teaching of the Catholics through catechesis and preaching.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and explain the understanding of Catholics at Stasi St. Maria Imakulata Oeltua, Parish of St. Josef Pekerja Penfui, regarding the meaning of the offering and its correlation with their absence from Sunday Mass. This study is a qualitative study that uses a literature approach. The results of this study show that a number of Catholics at Stasi St. Maria Imakulata Oeltua have a wrong understanding about the meaning of the offering. According to them, offering is not only as a form of gratitude to God, but also a condition to get God’s blessing. That point of view has to do with their absence in the Eucharist on Sunday. They will not attend the Eucharist on Sunday when they do not have money to give to the Church as a form of their offering. The Eucharist is actually the source and peak of the faith of Christians. The main and first offering in the Eucharistic Celebration is the self and the heart of the Christians themselves. In other words, the main and most important offering of Christians is the offering of self or the offering of whole life; and not money. Money is needed to sustain the life and ministry of the Church, but it is not the main thing of the Christians offering. Therefore, to correct this misunderstanding, catechesis needs to be held as a means of teaching the true Catholic faith.
