Abstract

Having a pet is a dream come true for many children. However, it will not happen without their parents’ approval. A common reason is because the parents hesitate to believe the children still have no responsibilities to take care of the pets. Yet, allowing children the opportunity to care for a pet can be a valuable way for them to learn about responsibility. The parents that gave permission for the children to have pets are teaching and explaining the tasks and responsibilities to take care of pets, such as what kind of handling or treatments that can make them happy, sad, angry, or even hurt the pets but also the caregiver. Books become one of the most effective and advantageous media for the children and the parents. Through books, children can learn to read, add more vocabularies, entertain themselves, and learn the guides to take care of pets. At the same time, the book is a guide for the parents to teach and support their children.

Abstract

Intended to cultivate children's reading interest in the city of Medan through this illustrated book. The main focus of this book is to introduce the historical building Warenhuis, which is a silent witness to the colonial growth of the city of Medan. This design is based on the fact that there are not many visual educational media telling local stories, especially about Dutch colonial buildings, many of which are currently abandoned or damaged. The author followed five steps of the design thinking approach during the design process. This design contributes to education by using creative and educational illustration media.
