Abstract

Professional identity of English teachers is an important process in which teachers view themselves as a professional based on social views about “good teacher”, studentteacher relationship, and self-view as a professional teacher. Teacher preparation program such as Micro Teaching (MT) and Program Pengalaman Lapangan or PreService Teaching Practice (PTP) influences this process by providing support and opportunities in creating a strong professional identity since they are still in a preservice phase. The different nature between MT (situated) and PTP (concrete) can be challenging to the pre-service teachers (PSTs), especially during the PTP. These challenges are called professional identity tensions and they involve PSTs (as a person and professional) and undesirable situation. This study aimed to identify the professional identity tensions faced by EFL PSTs during their PTP and how they coped up with the tensions. The study employed a qualitative survey design. The results identified six professional identity tensions and two coping strategies from the story of seven EFL PSTs. Those PSTs was indicated either to feel tension or to have experiences that might lead them to tension. Keywords: EFL pre-service teacher; professional identity tension; coping strategy

Abstract

The availability of technological learning media offers easiness in determining relevant learning activities. Moreover, this can also be integrated into the principle of a student-centered learning system which would promote students to be more independent in managing their study. This study investigated the relationship between the video project activity and freshmen’s learning autonomy in the Intermediate Speaking course. Nine students of the English Language Education Study Program of the 2022/2023 batch were involved as the participants of this correlational study. To gather the data, a learner autonomy questionnaire and the result of students’ speaking video project were used. The Pearson Product Moment formula was used to analyze the correlation of the two variables. The findings of this study confirmed possible implications between the correlational of “learning autonomy” and “learning achievement”.

Abstract

Our world has been transformed dramatically by COVID-19 Pandemic as it affected health, economy, politic, social, education, etc. The aim of this research is discovering students’ reflection toward their personal and academic life during early COVID-19 pandmic situations grounded on three zones, namely fear, learning, and growth zones. This descriptive qualitative survey research used questionnaires to gather the data from 187 freshmen in a university in Palembang. The data were analyzed and interpreted by using a thematic analysis consisting of six steps, namely (1) familiarizing with the data, (2) generating initial codes, (3) searching for themes, (4) reviewing themes, (5) defining and naming themes, and (6) producing the report. The research results show that students reflected on their personal and academic life differently when it was reflected based on the three zones. There were also some factors influencing the reflection, namely the transition between senior high school and university and the typically online learning process demanding autonomous learning. Finally, the research suggests that, alongside the society, students might learn how to move gradually one zone to another in order to overcome this global crisis. Therefore, covid-19 pandemic should be perceived then as a lesson learnt.
