Abstract

Problems in interpreting the concept of the Qur'an have become a significant issue in the discourse of Islamic thought in the modern era. One of the figures who paid great attention to efforts to explore the meaning of the Qur'an is Farid Esack, who used hermeneutic studies as a tool of interpretation. In line with that, this study aims to analyze the study of liberation and justice for women using Farid Esack's hermeneutic thinking. This research uses a qualitative research method with Farid Esack's hermeneutic approach. The results show that the hermeneutics initiated by Farid Esack, namely liberation hermeneutics, uses critical reasoning that places revelation, reality, and interpretation in an interacting relationship. This approach aims to produce interpretations that are oriented towards liberation and justice. The application of Farid Esack's hermeneutics can be seen in his interpretation of women's liberation from oppression and injustice, especially in the context of divorce. One example is the introduction of the concept of iddah as mentioned in the Qur'an surah Al-Baqarah verse 228 and the relevant hadith. Esack explains that a wife is still entitled to receive maintenance from her husband during the iddah period. This concept can be used as a basis for analyzing current conditions through an Islamic hermeneutic approach.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the contemporary relevance of Nurcholish Madjid’s thought on democracy and pluralism in Indonesia. Through a qualitative literature review guided by Miles and Huberman’s analytical framework, the study synthesizes Madjid’s intellectual formation, core democratic principles, and his nuanced approach to the relationship between Islam and the state. The findings highlight Madjid’s persistent insistence that democracy is not a finished project but an ongoing, adaptive process—one that demands ethical substance, critical participation, and continuous negotiation between religious values and civic institutions. By comparing Madjid’s ideas to those of prominent Muslim thinkers such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Abdullahi An-Na’im, Khaled Abou El Fadl, and Asef Bayat, the article situates his contribution within both Indonesian and broader Islamic discourses. Madjid’s advocacy for substantive democracy and active pluralism is shown to be deeply rooted in both his personal experience and his reading of Indonesia’s diverse society. The analysis demonstrates that, in the face of growing populism, the instrumentalization of religious identity, and persistent challenges to civil rights, Madjid’s vision remains urgently relevant. Rather than offering a static blueprint, Madjid’s legacy is framed as a provocation to rethink and revitalize democracy as an open, unfinished process. His call for loyal opposition, civil courage, and social learning is presented as both a challenge and a guide for Indonesia’s ongoing democratic experiment. The article concludes that Madjid’s ideas offer not easy answers, but a critical lens and a moral discipline for navigating the dilemmas of democracy, pluralism, and national identity in Indonesia today.

Abstract

Orientalist studies on Islam have played a significant role in shaping Western perceptions and understanding of the religion. Throughout the history of interaction between Islam and the Western world, Orientalist studies have served both as a bridge of knowledge and a field of controversy. As times have evolved, the challenges of pluralism and diversity demand an inclusive and equal platform of communication among religious adherents. This article explores in depth the implications of Orientalist studies on the dynamics of interreligious dialogue in the era of globalization, particularly between Islam and other major world religions. The focus of this article is to analyze both the positive contributions and negative impacts of Orientalist studies, as well as the integration of a moderate approach in responding to the legacy of Orientalism. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach. The findings reveal that Muslim responses to Orientalist studies are divided into two: some reject them due to perceived hidden agendas, while others accept them with critical reservations as a means of internal reflection and correction. In this context, interreligious dialogue becomes a strategic space to correct misunderstandings and strengthen the values of justice, tolerance, and peace. Orientalist studies have both positive and negative effects on interreligious dialogue. On one hand, biases and misperceptions introduced by Orientalist studies may hinder dialogue and exacerbate prejudice. On the other hand, objective Orientalist studies in the globalized era can enrich interfaith knowledge and open up opportunities for deeper understanding among religious communities.
