Abstract

Aims: Older adults are often accompanied by chronic disease which makes nursing care more complex. The experiences of students providing care to older adults can encourage them to gain a deeper understanding, find effective strategies when facing challenges, and realize their own needs as future nurses. This study aimed to determine the experiences of nursing students in carrying out geriatric nursing practice. Methods: This study employed a qualitative study using a narrative research design. The purposive sample consisted of twelve nursing students who had completed 2 weeks of geriatric nursing. The variables explored were experiences of nursing students during geriatric nursing practice. Data collection used in this study was a student’s reflective assignment. The analysis was conducted using a thematic analysis approach. Results: All respondents were willing to participate in the study. Five themes emerged, including family assistance during care, the patient's condition while undergoing treatment, students' feelings and competencies when caring for the elderly, changes in a better understanding of the elderly, and expected goals to be achieved by students. Conclusions: This study focuses on the implementation of care for elderly patients in the hospital, which promotes the need for students to improve their skills in providing nursing care.

Abstract

Background: Sleep deprivation in patients with heart failure can negatively deteriorate its condition. Purpose: Identify the sleep deprivation in patients with heart failure (HF) and related factors, and the impact of sleep deprivation. Method: literature review of quantitative studies. The search strategy employs terms relevant to the research question: HF, sleep deprivation on HF patients. Inclusion criteria papers had to be published in English after 2013 to 2023. 3 databases were searched (Pubmed, Ovid, Ebscohost). Results: 12 studies were identified (cross-sectional (9 studies) secondary from longitudinal observational (2 studies), randomized controlled trial (1 study). Total patients with HF in all studies are 2359 samples. The most questionnaire to measure sleep deprivation used over the papers are Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).PSQI mean score range from 5.04 (2.80) to 12.29 (3.91). The prevalence of sleep deprivation ranges from 36.5% to 98.8%. The related factors with sleep deprivation including older age, women, living in urban, lower employment, smoking, high BMI, HF condition, sleep factors, anxious, depressive, and stress. The consequences of sleep deprivation such as lower self-care behavior, self-confidence, attention, increasing pain, shorter cardiac event-free survival, functional outcome, prognosis, quality of life, increase unplanned hospitalization risks, poorer perfomance in cognitive in adults and worse perfomance on cognitive. Conclusion: Sleep deprivation in HF is higher and related with demographic, HF related factors, lifestyle, sleep factors, and psychosocial. The consequences of sleep deprivation have adverse effects on psychosocial and cognitive.

Abstract

Renal failure is a chronic disease that requires long-term management, including fluid intake restrictions. Patient compliance with fluid restrictions is crucial to prevent complications, but it is often difficult to achieve without family support. This study aims to investigate the relationship between family support and compliance with fluid restrictions among kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis at private hospital in Indonesia.  The method used was quantitative with a correlational approach and  simple purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of 132 patients, with questionnaire to measure family support and the Interdialytic Weight Gain sclae to assess compliance.  Data analysis used Spearman’s rho test. The results showed no significant relationship  between family support and fluid restriction compliance (p = 0.217; r = 0.108). Family support was predominantly in the good category, while fluid restriction compliance was in the moderate category. Further research is recommended using qualitative methods and a larger sample size to gain a deeper understanding of the form of family support and its relationship  with patient compliance in undergoing hemodialysis.

Preventive and disease management are responses taken to strive for the global goal of reducing premature mortality caused by non-communicable diseases. Preventive and management efforts are carried out by providing education about awareness. Awareness includes all efforts made for disease management. Awareness can then have an impact on the ability to control the disease. This activity aims to provide an understanding of self-awareness as an effort to manage and prevent hypertension and hypertension screening. The provision of education is carried out through PkM activities, with counseling methods and practice exercises with target participants being residents of GKJ Kiaracondong Bandung. PkM activities are divided into 3 session and each session has a duration of 25 minutes. Session 1 Emotional awareness, session 2 Practice of relaxation techniques and gymnastics and session 3 Health Check in the form of measuring BMI, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. In the PkM activity, 88 participants attended, the majority of participants were > 50 years old, namely 68 (77.3%), had no history of disease as many as 45 (51.1%), had systolic blood pressure conditions in the pre-hypertension category 27 (30.7%), had diastolic blood pressure conditions in the normal category as many as 47 (53.4%), the majority had good cholesterol levels, namely 25 (50%), the majority had BMI in normal conditions, namely 45 (51.1%), and almost all participants (97.6%) answered 80% of the statements correctly related to knowledge about awareness and hypertension. Awareness education and breathing exercise practice proved to be easy to understand and apply for preventive efforts and management of high blood pressure. Continuing education programs targeting people with prediabetes and diabetes are essential interventions that can be implemented in further study to improve public health. Keywords: Community Service, Education, IMT, Blood Pressure, Hypertension, Awareness
