Abstract

This research discusses how to restore the coffee culture of ancient people and its relationship with modern cafes that exist today. In ancient times, people drank coffee by producing the ingredients themselves, from growing the coffee to the brewing process. However, as time progressed, instant coffee emerged which made people start consuming instant coffee because the manufacturing process was practical, the price was relatively cheap and the taste had many innovations. This research uses a systems theory perspective by Walter Buckley and is reinforced by Niklas Luhmann's General Systems Theory. According to him, this systems theory focuses on the relationship of various processes in a social system. The research method used is a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach. The research results show that many cafes that have been established today have brought back the coffee culture of ancient people. This can be proven by making coffee starting from the coffee beans to the blooming process or brewing the coffee using a coffee maker.

Abstract

This research will discuss the community's efforts in maintaining the heritage of the ancestors given, namely the Lahbako dance. Lahbako dance is a typical Jember dance, where this dance exists to show a series of tobacco processing from planting to packaging tobacco. This arian can be said to be a tradition that is carried out every time tobacco planting and has become one of the icons of the city of Jember. It is well known that technological development has been increasingly rapid, and young people are starting to be reluctant to learn or just find out what has become the history of their own nation. The existence of the Lahbako dance which used to be a tradition during the harvest season, is now also used as a tourist attraction, so it can be said that there is a shift in cultural functions. Therefore, efforts are needed to introduce all groups, especially young people so that they can continue to preserve or innovate the culture. In this study we use Robert K. Merton's theory of Structural Functionalism, which emphasizes the need to understand the many functions associated with society, in order to maintain the social structure in society. The functions in question are dysfunction, latent function, and manifest function. In this research using qualitative research methods, with an ethnographic approach.

Abstract

The community service program conducted by the Community Service (KKN) Team of the University of Jember in Gombolirang Village provided practical solutions to agricultural challenges, particularly in pest and disease control. The program focused on introducing environmentally friendly alternatives, including the use of botanical pesticides made from easily accessible plant-based ingredients such as lemongrass, maja fruit, and garlic, as well as the installation of yellow traps. Activities carried out in August 2025 included field observation, farmer interviews, extension sessions, demonstrations on the production of botanical pesticides and yellow traps, along with interactive discussions with farmer groups from five hamlets (Krajan, Kertosari, Cungking, Sempu, and Ancar). Data were collected through direct observation and evaluation of the community’s response to the introduced innovations. The implementation of this program showed that farmers in Gombolirang Village were highly enthusiastic and successfully gained practical skills in producing botanical pesticides and applying yellow traps as cost-effective and environmentally friendly pest control methods. These technologies were considered effective in reducing pest populations without disrupting the rice field ecosystem. Most participants also expressed their willingness to independently apply these methods in the next planting season. Thus, this program contributed to enhancing farmers’ capacity and encouraging the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices at the local level.

Abstract

This study discusses the impact of coffee culture modernity on local economic development in Jember district, East Java. Coffee culture has become an important part of the lives of the people of Jember, but modernity has changed the way people enjoy coffee and has had a significant impact on the local economy. The existence of modernity has made a shift in people in Jember who initially drank coffee at coffee shops, now they prefer to drink coffee in modern cafes that are more prestigious. This can of course threaten the existence of simple coffee shops, because the capital they have is not large, making it difficult for them to keep up with the development of modern society that continues to develop all the time. In this study, we use the concept of the juggernaut modernity theory by Anthony Giddens, where in his theory it is explained that modern life is an uncontrollable world, where there is always a process of change that occurs on a large scale and with a deeper scope. This study uses a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach. The results of the study show that modernity has quite an impact on the economy of the local community, such as the increase in employment due to the number of modern cafes to the emergence of the threat of alienation received by simple coffee shops.
