Abstract

The success of the second language acquisition by students is determined by the second language vocabulary mastery as vocabulary is the words that make up a language. The present study aimed at investigating the vocabulary mastery level and vocabulary learning strategies of students majoring in English. The participants were 46 students of the third-year English Education Department at the University of Lampung for the 2020/2021 academic year. This study applied a descriptive quantitative research design, with data collection instruments of test and questionnaire. A vocabulary size test was utilized to identify the students’ vocabulary mastery level. Meanwhile, the questionnaire was employed to explore the learning strategies used by the students to enhance and retain their vocabulary knowledge. The researcher analyzed the data statistically and then described the data so that a reliable finding could be obtained. The results revealed that most English Education Department students at the University of Lampung were above the median vocabulary mastery level. Furthermore, in learning vocabulary, using English media was the most preferred strategy, while talking to a native speaker is the least used strategy by the students.Keywods: Second language acquisition, vocabulary mastery, vocabulary learning strategies, vocabulary size.

Abstract

The problems discussed in this study are related to the development of the quality Reading instruction through a contextual approach for students of English language program. The purpose of the study is to improve the quality of Reading learning through a contextual approach to students of the English Language Education Study Program, FKIP, University of Lampung. This research employed Class Action Research (CAR) which is intended to provide information on how to take appropriate actions to improve student activities in the learning process with a contextual learning approach that has an impact on increasing student learning achievement. The results showed that the quality of Reading learning increased through a contextual approach in the English Language Education Study Program students. In the first cycle, the average achievement score stands at 62.4, which then rises to 68.7 in the second cycle, and further increases to 77.2 in the third cycle. This proves that the use of a contextual approach is able to improve the quality of reading learning for English Language Education Study Program students, FKIP, University of Lampung.

Abstract

Although the provision of egalitarian education in a multicultural context is deemed fundamental, this field has not received considerable concern. Using a systematic literature review and meta-analysis, this study aims to review 44 articles on multicultural context equity education from the Scopus database between 2013 and 2022, which include the following five research problems: (1) the number of publications and the geographical distribution; (2) authors making the most significant contributions; (3) articles having the greatest influence on the field of equity education in multicultural settings; (4) research methodology; and (5) perceptions and attitudes toward equity education in multicultural context. The findings reveal that the United States is the predominant source of all publications. While the most significant articles are from the United States, one of the most prolific authors is from China. Almost all of publications employ qualitative research method and are descriptively analyzed. Observations, interviews, document analysis, and questionnaires are frequently applied instruments. To mitigate this predominance, prospective research might adopt mixed-method approaches that integrate the profundity of qualitative analysis with the generalizability inherent in quantitative studies. Scholars believe that the issue of the number of minority groups who face challenges to engage in the education sector must be addressed. Therefore, policies that ensure diverse communities receive an equitable education are essential.

Abstract

Abstract: Creative Writing Process among Pre-service EFL Teachers in the Indonesian Context: A translanguaging approach. Translanguaging has been common practice in EFL environment, especially in the process of teaching and learning. This paper aims to investigate pre-service teachers’ translanguaging practices and attitudes toward the pedagogical approach in EFL Creative Writing Class. This study is conducted through a qualitative design with three steps of data collection; giving creative writing project, classroom observation, and interview. The sample in this study is pre-service English teachers of Lampung University. The data analysis are done by highlighting the translanguaging practice among students during the process of short-story production. The analyzed data show that translanguaging occurs in every phase of the writing process. The participants of this study applied translanguaging not only to develop their short-story, but also to give feedback to their classmates’ works. The study’s implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research are also discussed to provide clearer path on possible development of studies in the field of translanguaging. Keywords: Creative writing, perceptions towards translanguaging, short story, translanguaging, translanguaging pedagogical approachDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202404

Abstract

This autoethnographic study aims to explore the role of code-switching as a language acquisition and self-discovery strategy within an English language learner’s journey. This research integrates personal narrative and reflection to analyze the author’s own linguistic experiences. The research data was gathered through retrospection, narrative journaling, and an analysis of personal linguistic interactions. The data was then thematically analyzed to identify emerging patterns and meanings in the use of code-switching, connecting them to the processes of language acquisition and identity formation. The findings indicate that code-switching serves not only as a functional tool but also as an adaptive mechanism that facilitates cognitive and cultural understanding. This process highlights how multilingualism can be leveraged to transcend monolingual limitations, leading to a deeper mastery of the language and a richer sense of self.

Abstract

In an increasingly globalized academic landscape, understanding the pragmatic dynamics of EFL classroom interactions in culturally nuanced contexts like Indonesia is essential. This study offers an exploration of the interplay between politeness and impoliteness strategies within the hierarchical and communal culture of an Indonesian higher education setting. Using a qualitative case study design, the research was conducted at a public university in East Java, involving one lecturer and 50 first-year students. Data were collected through video recordings of classroom interactions, followed by transcription and coding using a framework based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory and Culpeper’s model of impoliteness. Findings indicate that while positive politeness predominates to foster a collaborative atmosphere, a unique pattern of accidental impoliteness emerges among freshmen. This lack of pragmatic awareness suggests that impoliteness in this context is not a tool for social friction, but a byproduct of the transitional struggle between secondary school norms and university expectations. These findings imply that EFL pedagogy in Indonesia must go beyond linguistic accuracy to include explicit pragmatic instruction. Specifically, there is a need for curriculum adjustments that help students navigate the socio-cultural expectations of higher education to prevent unintentional communication breakdowns in the classroom.
