Abstract

The problems discussed in this study are related to the development of the quality Reading instruction through a contextual approach for students of English language program. The purpose of the study is to improve the quality of Reading learning through a contextual approach to students of the English Language Education Study Program, FKIP, University of Lampung. This research employed Class Action Research (CAR) which is intended to provide information on how to take appropriate actions to improve student activities in the learning process with a contextual learning approach that has an impact on increasing student learning achievement. The results showed that the quality of Reading learning increased through a contextual approach in the English Language Education Study Program students. In the first cycle, the average achievement score stands at 62.4, which then rises to 68.7 in the second cycle, and further increases to 77.2 in the third cycle. This proves that the use of a contextual approach is able to improve the quality of reading learning for English Language Education Study Program students, FKIP, University of Lampung.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether any significant improvement in students' speaking skills after being given by oral corrective feedback.This research was quantitative-research andusedonegrouppretest-posttestdesignasthemethod. The population of this research was the first grade students of SMPN 2 Rajabasa Lampung Selatan in the academic year 2022/2023. The sample of this research was in class VII which consisted of 26 students.In collecting the data, the researcher used speaking test and the data were analyzed using SPSSProgram. The result showed that there was statistically significant improvement of students’ speaking skills after receivingOral Corrective Feedback with the significant level 0.00 less than 0.005. Abstract

The research was conducted to find out whether there is any significant improvement on students’ reading comprehension of analytical exposition text after the use selection and organization strategies. This research is quantitative research and used one group pretest-posttest design as the method. The subject of this research is 36 students at second grade of SMAN 1 Kebun Tebu in class XIIIS 3. Instruments that used in this research were reading test.The data were collect through paired samplet-test SPSS 16.The results of the research ,  there is significant improvement on student’s reading comprehension of analytical exposition text after the use selection and organization strategies. The results showed that the students’ mean score on the pre-test was 61.22 and the mean score on the post-test was 70.67.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to find out whether there was any improvement of the students’ writing skill in recount text after they have been taught by implementing direct written corrective feedback and to find out which aspect of writing that improves the most after the implementation of direct written corrective feedback in terms of micro skills. This research is a quantitative research. The design used was  one group pretest and posttest because the students’ writing skill was measured in one group of participants before and after the treatments were administered. The subjects were 28 students of class VIII A of SMPN 38 Bandar Lampung. The instrument was a writing test in form of essay. The data were in form of scores taken from the pretest and posttest and were analyzed by using Paired Sample t- test. The result showed there was a statistically improvement of students’ writing skill in recount text viewed from the pretest score to the posttest score (60.91 to 76.39) after they have been taught by implementing direct written corrective feedback. Furthermore, the feedback technique was not only effective in improving students’ recount writing in general, but also effective in improving students’ score in all aspects of writing: content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics.  Language use was the aspect of writing that improved the most by direct feedback technique in terms of micro skills. Keywords: Direct written corrective feedback, recount text, writing.

Abstract

This research was about short story to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement in third grade of SMPN 7 Metro. The statement of problem are: 1. Is short story effective to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement? 2. Which aspect of vocabulary improves the most after the implementation of short story? The objective of the research are to see whether the use of short story is effective to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement and to see which aspect of vocabulary improves the most after the implementation of short story. The sample of this research was class of III D in SMPN 7 Metro. The instrument of this research is test (pre and post test). The result of the study demonstrated a significant improvement in vocabulary achievement following the use of short story in the classroom. The mean result of pre-test is 53.28 while the mean result of post-test is 63.28. For the aspect of vocabulary that most improve after the implementation of short story is meaning with experienced the highest increase with an increase in score of 3.75. Based on the result of study, it can be concluded that short story is effective to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

Speaking is considered an important English skill, yet many English Foreign Learnersstruggle in communicating their ideas in English. Therefore, this research aimed to comparewhich approach between monolingual or bilingual gives a better effect to be applied in anEnglish-speaking classroom. This research employed an experimental design, whichcompared two groups taught using two different approaches. Oral assessment was utilized tocollect the data, which were computed using SPSS 27. The data were calculated by usingformulas, including, the homogeneity test, paired sample T-test, and independent groupsamples test. The results showed that the experimental group obtained a pre-test score of 32and a post-test score of 53, with a paired sample T-test value of -30.309. On the other hand,the control group gained a pre-test score of 31 and a post-test score of 35, and a pairedsample T-test value of -6.767. The paired sample T-test results showed that both approachescaused some significant improvements in the students’ speaking achievement. On the otherhand, the final scores resulted in the Independent Sample Test as 5.033 with a Sig. (2-tailed)of 0.00, which is lower than the critical value (0.05). This indicated that there is a significantdifference between students’ speaking achievement after being taught through monolingualand bilingual approaches, where the students who received the monolingual approach gainedthe most improvement. Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate whether or not there was a significant correlation between University students’ involvement in AIESEC and their English public speaking ability. The research involved 30 students of Lampung University by employing quantitative research by distributing questionnaire dealing with involvement in AIESEC and public speaking performance in order to collect the data. The data were analyzed using product moment correlation in SPSS 26.The result showed that University students’ involvement in AIESEC correlates with the public speaking ability with a significant correlation coefficient (r) 0.8. From the result, it can be concluded that University students’ involvement in AIESEC significantly contributes to students’ performance in public speaking.Keywords: Public speaking, University students’ involvement, AIESEC, correlation.
