Abstract

The ability of junior high school students to solve algebra word problems in learning mathematics is an important part and must be mastered well.  However, the results of observations carried out by researcher at one of the junior high schools in Yogyakarta showed that students had difficulty solving and understanding algebra word  problems. In addition, when working on assignments given by the teacher, students tend to rely on the results of their friends' work without showing the initiative to learn independently. Therefore, this research aims to analyze students' difficulties in solving algebra word problems in terms of their self-directed learning. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with the research subjects being all class VII students in one of the junior high schools in Yogyakarta. The data collection techniques in this research used a self-directed learning scale and a learning difficulties test. The research results show that students with high self-directed learning are able to solve problems in algebra word problems, but are less careful in obtaining the final results. Students in the  middle self-regulated learning category are experiencing difficulties in writing descriptions and simplifying and operating algebraic multiplication and division operations. Meanwhile, students with low self-regulated learning have difficulty understanding the concept of algebraic operations and applying it in the context of algebraic word problems. It is hoped that the research findings will provide an idea for teachers to train students' self-regulated learning so that their ability to solve algebra word problems can be even better.

Abstract

Measuring student discipline is crucial because it helps create an orderly and conducive learning environment and teaches responsibility and self-control. This study aims to develop an effective non-test instrument for measuring student discipline using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and the Partial Credit Model (PCM) from Item Response Theory (IRT). The instrument was analyzed using EFA, which successfully identified five main factors corresponding to aspects of discipline: self-control, compliance (adherence to rules), concentration ability, strong determination, and responsibility. IRT analysis with the PCM model revealed that the items in the instrument had varying levels of difficulty and discrimination, with nine out of 15 items showing good discriminatory power. This instrument can provide accurate and reliable measurements of student discipline, assisting educators in identifying areas needing improvement and designing appropriate interventions to support character development. This study demonstrates that combining EFA and IRT PCM can produce a valid, reliable instrument with good discriminatory power.

Abstract

Mathematics is a scientific discipline that plays a crucial role in developing skills and thinking that are important in everyday life. In mathematics learning, effective and practical learning resources are the determining factor for success in achieve learning goals. Answering this problem, the mathematics pocket book Handy Math: Math Made Simple from Elevateach Media is here as a potential solution. This research aims to obtain the results of analysis and interpretation of market research data regarding the potential and market interest in mathematics pocket book products. Worksheets are used to conduct market research to identify target consumers followed by establishing test hypotheses to determine the level of competency and business potential. The analytical method used is through trend, similarity, contradiction and odd groups analysis of data obtained through distributing questionnaires. Market research results stated that 67.9% of respondents had an attractive impression of mathematics pocket books. Pocket books are more widely known when attending school, so marketing pocket books to schools will increase sales. Mathematics pocket books need to pay attention to quality in terms of content/material, design and practicality of the pocket book. The most popular pocket book products are in the price range of IDR 20,000 - 30,000.
