Abstract

‘Pinjam Pustaka,’ a reading community in Sorong City, Southwest Papua, has been a cornerstone for reading habits since January 2021. This study explores the essence of 'Pinjam Pustaka,' seeking to evaluate its book collection to ensure its relevance and suitability for readers of all ages and backgrounds. The study reveals that this reading community offers a diverse array of materials, including textbooks, encyclopedias, novels, and comics, catering to those who lack access to such resources. It also supports self-learning and non-formal education, adapting to the digital age. With its collection continuously growing through donations, 'Pinjam Pustaka' underscores the importance of evaluating children's books to meet the community's changing needs. In 2022, the reading community saw about 720 visitors, primarily children, underlining its significance in the community. A comprehensive book evaluation in 2023, involving four researchers, classified books across seven reading levels and found 1.365 books. This process revealed a balanced distribution between early and beginning readers (43%) and intermediate to advanced readers (57%), suggesting the potential for broader engagement activities. This evaluation ensures that every reader finds suitable material and paves the way for expanding the reading community's appeal beyond its young primary audience.

Abstract

Mansapur Community Reading Park, TBI Robert Fulton, and EGAD Kairos Reading House are community reading parks in Sorong that aim to increase the community's reading interest. Reading remains a significant issue in Indonesia, especially in Papua. This research aimed to identify community reading parks' efforts, supporting and inhibiting factors, and their contributions to enhancing reading interest. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative case study. Three informants from TBI Robert Fulton, EGAD Kairos Reading House, and Mansapur Community Reading Park were interviewed, and then observations and documentation studies were conducted. The study found that various efforts were made by community reading parks, including collaboration with other communities, foundations, and the government as supporting factors. However, there were also issues, such as a need for more human resources and books and problems with the location of reading parks. The study also found that community reading parks contributed to increasing reading interest. The conclusion this study concludes that despite facing various challenges, these three community reading parks provide efficiently accessible spaces, serve as sources of reading and recreation through various activities, build partnerships with many parties, and promote literacy through social media campaigns. The study also needs to identify gaps in their role as academic or research reference sources.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of literacy training for Pokmaswas in the Raja Ampat region, especially in North and East Misool, using a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The main focus is improving literacy and conservation awareness among Pokmaswas members and teachers. Quantitative data were collected through pre-test and post-test, while qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews. The results showed a significant increase in understanding among participants, with the average score rising from 30 to 48.94 at Pos Kasim and from 34.16 to 54.16 at Pos Fol Pulau in Folley Island. Most participants achieved "Satisfactory" and "Very Satisfactory" ratings, although some remained in the "Unsatisfactory" and "Very Unsatisfactory" categories, indicating a need for a more tailored approach and further guidance. The activities also raised awareness of the sustainability of natural resources, integrating traditional practices such as Sasi and Pokmaswas activities to educate the community. However, there are challenges in ensuring equal access to literacy in remote areas, which require ongoing support from various parties to enhance the program's effectiveness and reach. This study emphasizes the importance of literacy as a key to supporting conservation and preserving local knowledge through education, particularly with children's books that are contextually relevant.
