Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to evaluate the forms and underlying causes of educational degradation in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) within the context of the digital era. It is to identify Islamic Boarding schools which are prepared to adopt technology in their teaching systems Design/methodology/approach – The study employed a program evaluation method using a formative evaluation model. Data collection and analysis were conducted through a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were gathered through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically. Findings – The evaluation results revealed that the average scores for the aspects related to educational degradation and its contributing factors were extremely low, at only 16.4% and 19.5%, respectively. These findings suggest that the limited use of technology in pesantren teaching reflects an institutional decline. This condition is attributed to inadequate infrastructure, low digital literacy, resistance to cultural change, and the absence of curricula and policies aligned with contemporary developments. The study highlights the urgent need for strategic interventions to enhance infrastructure, digital competence, and curriculum reform to prevent pesantren from falling further behind in the digital era. Research implications/limitations – The study implies that the low level of digital adoption necessitates strategic planning for infrastructure provision and teacher training to improve digital literacy. However, the study is limited in scope to the analysis of Islamic education degradation within pesantren. Future research should consider broader investigations using inferential statistical analysis to measure the impact of technology adoption across different pesantren contexts. Originality/value – This research offers a novel contribution by proposing a data-driven approach, the use of digital platforms, and innovation in teaching methods as practical solutions to ensure the continuity of Islamic education in pesantren without compromising its core spiritual values

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) for school dropouts in Kasiro Ilir Village, Sarolangun Regency, along with the dynamics of influencing factors and the teaching strategies applied by educators. The high dropout rate caused by economic constraints has prompted community leaders to initiate non-formal religious education to prevent moral decadence among adolescents. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Field data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with local clerics (ulama), Quran teachers, parents, and school dropouts. The data were then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, utilizing source triangulation techniques for validity. The findings reveal that PAI is implemented flexibly at the teacher's residence by adopting classic Islamic boarding school (pesantren) methods, namely sorogan, bandongan, and talaqqi. The learning materials focus on Quranic literacy and the study of classic Islamic texts (kitab kuning) to instill essential moral values. The sustainability of this program is heavily supported by the high dedication of the educators and the cultural support of the local community, although it is still hindered by inadequate facilities, the fluctuating learning motivation of the children, and the absence of government intervention. Overall, the familial approach applied by the teachers has proven to be crucial and effective in restoring the religious understanding and character of children who are marginalized from the formal education system.

Abstract

Character education has become one of the primary priorities in Indonesian education to develop students who possess not only academic competence but also strong moral and religious values. However, the effectiveness of character development is highly influenced by teachers' commitment in implementing sustainable educational programs. This study aims to analyze the commitment of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in fostering students' character through religious activities at SMP Negeri 21 Batang Hari. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving the principal, Islamic Religious Education teachers, several teachers, and students selected using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of data analysis, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that the commitment of Islamic Religious Education teachers plays a significant role in strengthening students' religious, disciplinary, responsible, polite, honest, and socially caring character through various religious activities, including congregational prayers, Qur'an recitation, Yasin recitation, Friday charity programs, religious lectures, and Islamic boarding school activities during Ramadan. Teachers demonstrated their commitment by actively planning, implementing, supervising, mentoring, evaluating, and serving as role models throughout the character-building process. Although several obstacles were identified, including students' low motivation, family support, and peer influence, these challenges were addressed through continuous habituation, individual guidance, exemplary behavior, and collaboration with parents. Therefore, teachers' commitment serves as the key factor in ensuring the successful implementation of character education through religious activities in schools.
