Abstract

The process of preparing a thesis is a crucial stage in the academic journey of undergraduate Biology students. At this stage, students are faced with complex and demanding tasks, requiring effective self-regulation skills and resilience to academic pressure. This research aims to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and academic stress among undergraduate Biology students at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Pattimura University, during the thesis preparation process. This research employs a quantitative approach with data collection through questionnaires distributed to undergraduate Biology students. Statistical analyses, such as correlation, will be utilized to assess the relationship between self-efficacy and academic stress. The research findings reveal that the most common level of self-efficacy falls within the moderate category. Meanwhile, the categorization of academic stress levels indicates that the majority of respondents, comprising 19 individuals (44.2%), experience mild stress. Statistical analysis unveils a significant relationship between the level of self-efficacy and academic stress among students.

Abstract

Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a rapid-onset infection caused by the Dengue virus that can lead to severe shock and even death. Pometia pinnata, a plant found in the Maluku region, possesses untapped therapeutic potential despite the presence of secondary metabolite chemicals believed to have larvicidal properties. This study aims to evaluate the biolarvicidal efficacy of the leaf extract of Pometia pinnata against Aedes aegypti's larvae, a DHF carrier. The extraction process used the maceration technique employing ethanol as the solvent. A larvicidal experiment was performed to evaluate the bioactivity against Aedes aegypti larvae. The findings indicated that the leaf extract of Pometia pinnata possesses larvicidal properties against Aedes aegypti larvae, as evidenced by an LC50 value of 0.101%. The results offer insights into the possible utilisation of Pometia pinnata leaf extract as a viable source of active compounds for developing biolarvicides to control dengue vectors.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and coronary heart disease are among the leading causes of death in Indonesia. Health screening is an effective method in the prevention of NCDs, particularly for measuring blood pressure and blood glucose levels. The objective of this community service activity is to identify individuals at high risk of developing hypertension and diabetes mellitus, as well as to raise public awareness about the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle as a preventive measure against these two diseases. This activity utilized a social health service approach, with the main focus being to provide free healthcare services to the community in Buki Village, Selayar Regency, South Sulawesi. A total of 50 participants attended this activity. The program was divided into three phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The results of the community service show that, out of the 50 participants who underwent health screening, 6 individuals were found to have hypertension and 2 individuals had diabetes mellitus. This activity not only helped increase public awareness of the risks of NCDs but also served as an effective preventive step to avoid the progression of more serious health conditions in the future.

Abstract

According to the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) in 2018, approximately 49.52% of all internet users in Indonesia are aged between 19 and 34 years, with the majority of this age group being students. Prolonged computer use can lead to higher levels of asthenopia compared to other types of work. This study aims to examine the correlation between computer usage duration and the occurrence of asthenopia among students. A correlational design with a cross-sectional approach was employed in this study. A total of 76 participants were included, and data were collected via a questionnaire distributed online using Google Forms, which the respondents completed. The collected data were then analyzed univariately and bivariately using SPSS software. The results indicate that the majority of respondents experienced mild asthenopia, with a percentage of 78.9%. Statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between gender, duration of computer use, eye break intervals, history of major eye diseases, and medication consumption with the occurrence of asthenopia (p>0.05). However, a significant relationship was found between age and the occurrence of asthenopia (p<0.05).

Abstract

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus are metabolic disorders characterized by elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) due to the body’s inability to produce insulin effectively. Sustained hyperglycemia can affect various physiological parameters, including changes in body weight. Alstonia scholaris L. R. Br is a plant widely found in Southeast Asia. Alstonia scholaris stem bark extract contains bioactive compounds of flavonoids, saponins, and polyphenols that can be antidiabetic. This study aims to determine the therapeutic effect of pulai bark extract (Alstonia scholaris L. R. Br) on the body weight of mice (Mus musculus) induced by Streptozotocin. This research is experimental. A total of 18 mice were divided into 6 groups, namely the normal control group (KN), negative control group (K-), positive control group (K+), and DM mice group given the extract at a dose of 0.4 ml/mencit/day (P1), a dose of 0.8/ml/mencit/day (P2) and 1.6 ml/mencit/day (P3). Before treatment, all mice were weighed, and initial blood sugar levels were. After that, the K-, K+, P1, P2, and P3 groups were induced with streptozotocin mice at a dose of 0.3 ml for 14 days. Furthermore, suppose there is an increase in blood sugar levels. In that case, the K+ group is given the drug metformin, and the P1, P2, and P3 groups are given Alstonia scholaris stem bark extract at a predetermined dose. Data from the study were analyzed using an ANOVA test. The results showed that giving Alstonia scholaris stem bark extract can increase the body weight of DM mice.
