Abstract

Social media is the factor that influences different perspectives about Lombok's identity. This research aims to describe the meaning of images that represent Lombok's identity in the Instagram account “Inside Lombok” using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The analysis in this study uses Roland Barthes's theory, including denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and myth. ““Inside Lombok”'s” post is the source of this research regarding the outsider's perspective on Lombok identity and the perspective of Lombok people regarding Lombok's identity itself. The results of the study show that the representation of Lombok's identity depends on how people perceive Lombok. According to the three images, there are hidden meanings that only Lombok people can discover. Therefore, the representation in social media should be clear so that everyone has a similar viewpoint.

Abstract

This research is a phonological study that focuses on changes in the phoneme /f/ and /v/ in the use of English by hawkers around Mandalika Circuit, Lombok. This study aims to classify the forms and factors of phoneme changes /f/ and /v/ in the use of English by hawkers around Mandalika Circuit. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data is the utterances containing phonemes /f/ and /v/ from 25 hawkers. The intralingual identity method is used to analyze the form of phoneme change, and Weinreich’s theory (1979) is used to analyze the factors of phoneme change. The result shows that the phonemes /f/ and /v/ changed because the Sasak language did not have the phonemes /f/ and /v/, so there was a process of simplifying English into the Sasak language and creating local English variation. The local English variation is created due to the bilingualism of hawkers, low loyalty to English, and getting into a habit of Sasak language.

Abstract

The playfulness of English is the result of language interference, which can be a source of creating new English variations. The purpose of this study is to describe the form of English playfulness by hawkers at Kuta Beach, Lombok, and the factors of English playfulness. The method is descriptive qualitative. The data collection by ‘simak libat cakap’ or involved conversation observation technique, recording, and taking notes technique. The data analysis method is reduction, presentation, and conclusion. Data analysis shows that the playfulness of English by hawkers comes from loan translation in the form of reduplication of Indonesian and Sasak words into English. There are two forms of loan translation: a change in the meaning of English in accordance with Sasak and Indonesian, and not experiencing a change in meaning but experiencing the addition of English meaning in accordance with Sasak and Indonesian. The factors causing the English playfulness are internal factors such as the difference in vocabulary structure from Sasak and Indonesian to English and the influence of Indonesian and Sasak as the dominant language. Factors external the language are influential in English playfulness, such as level of education, economic status, occupation, regional origin, and the situation of speech.
