Abstract

ABSTRACT. This research attempts to analyses a discourse with the interactionist approach in the field of political communication. In this field, the utterances of a politician reflect his/her culture and contain elements of subjectivity. The politician, therefore, uses subjective or individual utterances (the elocutive) to reflect his/her identity, status, and position in his/her interaction with the audience. The objects of this study are seven speeches of Nicolas Sarkozy delivered between 2006 and 2011, and these were the most significant speeches during his presidential campaign and his presidency. The first step to conduct an interactionist analysis is collecting the data to compile a lexicographic corpus. This is to develop a reading grid for each speech and identify persuasive markers or traces that are found in each of the speeches by using the lexical table of Lexico3 software. The frequency of the use lexical forms that are parts of Nicolas Sarkozy's discursive strategy are subsequently analyzed and interpreted by using the theories proposed by Charaudeau (1992), Gumperz (1989), and Van Dijk (2007). The findings of this study show that subjective utterances support interactional communication process and hold the power of symbols. With these findings, this study can contribute to the making of the model of discursive strategy analysis with the interactionist approach. Keywords: elocution, political discourse, identity, subjective statement.

Abstract

Verbal language is vital in communication and is the most important means of interaction. By the significant role of verbal language, visuals are often less considered unnecessary, even though they could help to understand communication better. Verbal and visual language are interconnected and simultaneously build a strong, complete, structured text. This research focused on how a book writer communicates using two or more modes simultaneously, namely text and images, which is called multimodal discourse analysis, particularly social semiotics. This study analyzes the illustrated book "I Hate Diet" by Yulia Baltschun. Using a descriptive qualitative method that refers to the theory of reading images, Kress & Leeuwen's (2006) analysis relates to the existence of representational and interactive meanings with images divided into three aspects: information value, salience, and framing. In connection with the data analysis in the form of text or verbal, it is analyzed using the theory of seven development tasks by Gee (2011). The results indicated the meanings of the image or visual illustrations supported by verbal or text analysis. There are several representations of meaning in it, namely the meaning of motivational invitations and warnings or meanings that remind.

Abstract

Verbal stigmatization is part of the linguistic phenomenon. The effects of stigmatization can be felt in the near term and the future. However, stigmatization can negatively impact victims, so this phenomenon must be ended immediately. This study attempts to dissect the stigmatizing speech of highly educated women using Fairclough's AWK framework. The results of this study at the textual level found three types of speech: regulating, degrading, and cornering. The lingual form of stigmatization is found in the speech form ah, free, what, if, just, only, and only. In addition, it was also found that lingual expressions reflect stigmatization, namely in free speech “percuma dong” and “sayang banget”. The function of using the lingual form, based on the context of stigmatizing speech above, is to bring down mentally, influence negative thoughts, limit progress, and prohibit certain things. Furthermore, at the level of discursive practice from the five data above, there is an intertextuality between the discourse from the views of patriarchal and non-patriarchal societies. It shows that the stigmatization of highly educated women reflects patriarchal cultural thinking.

Abstract

Motherhood ideology is commonly found in literary works, including narratives depicting the figure of a mother. In literature, especially in Europe, the figure of a mother is mystified and is often associated with the figure of the Virgin Mary. This is closely related to the oppression experienced by women due to the inequality of gender construction produced by society. The novel Chanson Douce by Leila Slimani narrates two mothers with different backgrounds. This study aims to carry out a deconstruction reading, especially on the discourse of motherhood. In interpreting something we are always dominated by dominant hierarchies and superior poles which are considered as "single truth". This single truth can lead to vulnerability to discrimination or service. The deconstruction method used in this study uses the concepts of trace and difference, in readings that lead to the meaning of texts that are "friendly" to the others. The results of this study lead us to new questions regarding the challenges of motherhood in this post-industrial era.

Abstract

The problem of sexual violence has become a sensitive issue that has attracted the attention of various groups of people. In addition, this action classifies as a criminal act that causes physical and psychological harm. Sexual violence happens not only to women's groups but also to subordinated minority groups in society, such as the LGBTQ+ group. In early 2021, to be precise, in France, a student and student activist experienced sexual aggression by a politician from one of the dominant political parties there. He tried to seek justice by making testimony through his Twitter account. Unexpectedly, his testimony uttered various reactions related to the social reality of society. This article aims to explore and analyze the social context and speech response patterns that represent that context. Multiple stories of netizens' responses to testimonies of sexual violence uploaded by the @TT_Guillaume account that occurred in 2018 became the object of the study of this article. In writing the article, the method used is reading all the responses in the reply section, recording all the answers found. Moreover, the next step is classifying dan analyzing the data found, which is associated with Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis theory. The research discovers that the social context of Guillaume's utterances was related to sexual violence in institutions in France and influenced the presence of other testimonies. In addition, patterns that represent these social conditions were also found

Abstract

Social media is the factor that influences different perspectives about Lombok's identity. This research aims to describe the meaning of images that represent Lombok's identity in the Instagram account “Inside Lombok” using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The analysis in this study uses Roland Barthes's theory, including denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and myth. ““Inside Lombok”'s” post is the source of this research regarding the outsider's perspective on Lombok identity and the perspective of Lombok people regarding Lombok's identity itself. The results of the study show that the representation of Lombok's identity depends on how people perceive Lombok. According to the three images, there are hidden meanings that only Lombok people can discover. Therefore, the representation in social media should be clear so that everyone has a similar viewpoint.

Abstract

Conducted in one city and five regencies in DIY (the Special Region of Yogyakarta), this study aimed to identify the reason as to why the elementary, junior high, and high school students in these regions prefer using one Javanese register, namely ngoko, over the other registers. It is believed that this preference pertains to language socialization within the family, peer groups, and the media, both social and conventional. The theory of language vulnerability was used to analyze the data. The study employed two relevant quantitative methods. The first one includes a quantitative analysis of survey data on the background of language selection and the roles of subjects believed to be the enabler factors in the selection of ngoko. The second one is GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping to display spatial information on the distribution of Javanese register usage in the five regions. This study found that practicality is the main reason for students to use ngoko in everyday life. The habitus of DIY is an enabler factor in choosing this language variety at different school levels. Additionally, family, peer groups, and social media have the potential to be enabler factors, although it requires different ways and mechanisms to manage them.

Abstract

The research specifically examined French and Indonesian individuals’ representation from cognitive and interactional perspectives within sociocultural and sociocognitive contexts, mainly using dialogues in the comic book “Ma voisine est Indonésienne” (My Neighbor is Indonesian) by Emmanuel Lemaire. This comic strip was about the discovery of France through an Indonesian woman’s eyes and transcribes the two cultures’s encounters. The textual and structural aspects of the conversations were subject to analyses; their topical and situational dimensions were examined. NVIVO was used to support the qualitative analysis. The findings contribute to the development of a discourse analysis model of representation and perception of culturally based images or culturological models of communication, drawing heavily on Ulrike Niens’ social identity theory. The findings suggest that stereotypical conversations between the Indonesian and French characters in the comic book primarily occur within a social context, indicating that stereotyping is part of a complex dynamic process involving elements of subjectivity, collectivity, and intersubjectivity. These findings also reveal an unfavorable sociocultural representation of both Indonesian and French cultures, as 17 aggregated item codes demonstrate the representations of Indonesians are deemed unacceptable within French culture’s framework, while ten aggregated item codes indicate the representations of the French are deemed unacceptable within the Indonesian culture’s context. This implies language and cognition, influenced by prior experiences and societal norms, shape socialinteractions and contribute to stereotype creation.

Abstract

The study illuminates the complexities inherent in translating expressive language by analyzing the Indonesian novel Pulang by Leila S. Chudori and its English translation Home novel. Utilizing Appraisal discourse analysis, a robust linguistic framework for evaluating language, the study identify the translator's rendering of 155 expressive utterances from the source text into 158 corresponding passages in the English translation. The findings reveal salient patterns of alteration between the source and target texts. Specifically, shifts emerged in the translator's lexical choices pertaining to attitude, engagement, and graduation. While preserving the core ideas, the translated version exhibits distinct preferences for certain attitude markers, more frequent intensification, and a tendency to explicate engagement meanings more than the original Indonesian. Such modifications seem subtle yet prove consequential. The research indicates that altering the lexical or phrasal selections surrounding expressive speech can inadvertently distort the intended message and tenor, potentially diminishing the reader's investment and engagement with the literary work. Moving forward, translators seeking to produce more authentic translations of expressive texts must remain acutely cognizant of the cultural nuances ingrained in the source language and exercise care in choosing lexical items that accurately convey the original meanings and affect. Meticulous word choice preserves the vital expressive essence between languages. Overall, Appraisal discourse analysis demonstrates a robust framework for evaluating and enhancing literary translation quality.
