Abstract

The existing book provided by the government did not meet student's background knowledge and conditions. It less of learning activities which does not engage the students to take a part in the learning process. To overcome this problem, this study aims to integrate the Tanimbar culture as a local wisdom in learning, by developing digital textbook as a learning resource. The research carried out of a Research and Development method by applying ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation) model. The result of the developed of English Digital text book showed that:  Expert’s validation result of the developed materials was at good level, visual design was at exemplary level. Teacher’s validation of result of the developed materials was at excellent level, visual design was at exemplary level. Small group try –out showed that majority of them stated that the materials were very helpful for them in learning English. The result of the effectiveness of an English Digital Textbook based on Tanimbar local wisdom was seven students get excellent score, twenty two students get good score, one student gets fair score. Thus, it can concluded that the textbook was useful as guidance to enhance students’ knowledge toward local materials of Tanimbar.Abstrak Buku yang disediakan pemerintah saat itu tidak sesuai dengan latar belakang pengetahuan dan kondisi siswa. Kurangnya kegiatan pembelajaran yang tidak melibatkan siswa untuk mengambil bagian dalam proses pembelajaran. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengintegrasikan budaya Tanimbar sebagai kearifan lokal dalam pembelajaran, dengan mengembangkan buku teks digital sebagai sumber belajar. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode Research and Development dengan menerapkan model ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation dan Evaluation). Hasil pengembangan buku teks Bahasa Inggris Digital menunjukkan bahwa: Hasil validasi ahli terhadap materi yang dikembangkan berada pada tingkat baik, desain visual berada pada tingkat keteladanan. Validasi guru terhadap hasil materi yang dikembangkan berada pada tingkat sangat baik, desain visual berada pada tingkat keteladanan. Uji coba kelompok kecil menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas dari mereka menyatakan bahwa materi tersebut sangat membantu mereka dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Hasil keefektifan Buku Teks Digital Bahasa Inggris berbasis kearifan lokal Tanimbar adalah tujuh siswa mendapat nilai sangat baik, dua puluh dua siswa mendapat nilai baik, dan satu siswa mendapat nilai cukup. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa buku ajar ini bermanfaat sebagai pedoman untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan siswa terhadap materi lokal Tanimbar.

Abstract

Technology in the 21st century is valid in human social life. Almost all people all over the world use technology to complete their needs. Using the WhatsApp application on mobile phones or social media connected with a network of students in SMA Xaverius Ambon is more beneficial. This research focuses on the actual condition related to the impact of WhatsApp in EFL classes on The learning performance of second-grade students of SMA Negeri Xaverius Ambon. The researcher used a survey design to find the results of the students in the EFL Classroom perspective in using WhatsApp on students' learning performance. Fifty students' perspective answers from class A and class B of the second grade of SMA Negeri Xaverius Ambon were interviewed, and 50 questionnaires were given to students in the classroom. This research maintained that harmful purpose impacts the student's learning performance more. This research revealed that WhatsApp can be used to communicate easier and faster, providing specific and practical information and sharing knowledge among students; instead, it is acquired negatively on the performance of SMA Xaverius Ambon students. The findings of this research can be beneficial to SMA Xaverius EFL students and classroom teachers in developing WhatsApp in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe how WhatApps media in teaching grammar to students and describe the issue, and action research was conducted on thirty-two second-grade students. The data were collected from a questionnaire and observation checklist to assess students' engagement and how they used WhatsApp in learning. The results indicated that in cycle one, only 22, or 66%, of the students had achieved the passing grade, while in cycle 2, 32 students, or 100%, achieved the passing grade. There was an increase of 34% in students in the second cycle. The researcher finished cycle two because the total number of the student's results was standard score minimum achievement criterion 75. The students learned better in cycle 2. The students were active and participated in learning grammar using WhatsApp as media. The WhatsApp platform had the power to increase students' instructional interaction, mainly student-student interaction, followed by student-content interaction and student-teacher interaction in the teaching and learning process directly or online using WhatsApp as media. The WhatsApp platform provides participants with an open and flexible space for communicating, expressing ideas, and exchanging information, and the critical issue is WhatsApp can help students in learning grammar.

Abstract

Speaking is a crucial language skill encompassing the ability to pronounce words, convey ideas, thoughts, and opinions effectively. Despite its significance, many students exhibit a preference for their native language, such as Indonesian, over English. This study investigates the efficacy of utilizing picture series as a tool to improve students' English speaking proficiency at the second grade level of SMP Negeri 1 Tanimbar Utara. The research question addressed is whether picture series as a medium can enhance students' speaking ability. The objective is to explore how picture series as a medium can facilitate students' speaking skill development and improve their English language learning experience. This study adopts an experimental and quantitative research approach with a sample population of 50 students. The research instruments include a Speaking Skill Test and a Rating Scale of Speaking Skill Test. Data collection methods consist of Pre-Test and Post-Test assessments. The findings reveal a significant correlation between the use of picture series as a media and the enhancement of students' speaking skills. The validity test conducted through SPSS 25 confirms the suitability of the questionnaire items for research purposes. Overall, the results suggest that employing picture series as a teaching aid can effectively bolster students' speaking abilities, particularly for second-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tanimbar Utara.

Abstract

Education stands as a cornerstone sector, crucial for societal development and government attention, particularly in Indonesia. However, the education system in Indonesia faces challenges and necessitates continuous improvement to enhance learning and teaching processes. This study explores the effectiveness of utilizing conversation texts to improve students' speaking skills, focusing on English language learners at English House Course of SMA Negeri 10 Kepulauan Tanimbar. The research question addresses whether conversation texts can positively influence students' speaking proficiency. The objective is to assess the impact of incorporating conversation texts on students' speaking skills. This study employs descriptive and quantitative research methodologies with a sample population of 60 students. Pre-test and post-test assessments serve as research instruments, while data analysis utilizes the Product Correlation Moment technique and hypothesis testing with the t-test formula. The findings indicate a significant correlation between the use of conversation texts and the enhancement of students' speaking skills. The results demonstrate a strong correlation between the variables, with the t-test confirming the significance of the improvement. Thus, it is concluded that integrating conversation texts effectively improves students' speaking abilities at the English House Course of SMA Negeri 10 Kepulauan Tanimbar.

Abstract

The research objectives of this research are to explore the experiences of second semester students in learning English vocabulary using songs and to explore second-semester students' perceptions of the use of songs in vocabulary acquisition. The method used was qualitative descriptive. In this study, the researcher used interviews, open questionnaires, and documentation, and to analyze the research results, the researcher used thematic analysis method which was combined with thematic content analysis. The results showed that learning English vocabulary through songs provided a fun and meaningful learning experience for second-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Lelemuku Saumlaki University.
