Abstract

"We Need to Talk About Kevin" is a movie that tells the story of Kevin's life starting from infancy to adolescence, which shows various psychopathological symptoms. Since childhood, Kevin has had various behavioral disorders and has difficulty building a good relationship with his mother, Eva. These behavioral issues worsened until finally, Kevin committed murder against his father, younger sister, and his peers. There are various interactions that can be explained using a perspective from developmental psychopathology to explore every factor in Kevin's life. This research is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach to understand and interpret every aspect of Kevin's life from his childhood and analyze them using theories of developmental psychopathology. The result of this research shows that there are a few factors of developmental psychopathology depicted in the film such as genetics, environmental factors, attachment style, symptoms of maternal depression and stress during pregnancy, as well as parenting styles that play a role in each stage of Kevin's development. In the end, there are also solutions presented to minimize psychopathology in children, namely improving the quality of relationships, family communication, and good co-parenting between father and mother. Through this research, it is hoped that there will be a deeper understanding of the factors in the developmental psychopathology depicted in the film "We Need to Talk About Kevin". Keywords: movie analysis; phenomenological approach; developmental psychopathology

Abstract

Loneliness is a prevalent issue among urban populations, often leading to social withdrawal, or hikikomori, and leading to virtual friendships as alternative sources of connection. This study used a multiple-methods approach to explore the virtual friendship phenomenon in Indonesia, combining quantitative analysis of loneliness, hikikomori tendencies, and intentions to form virtual friendships, with qualitative insights into the characteristics of an ideal virtual friend. Data from 153 participants aged 25–35 showed significant correlations between all aspects of hikikomori (p<.001). A t-test revealed that individuals who had engaged in virtual friendships reported significantly higher loneliness (t = 9.2134, p < .001) measured using SELSA-S. Qualitative analysis showed that the most valued traits were being a good listener with unconditional acceptance. These findings highlight the need for public mental health initiatives, particularly in Indonesia, to address loneliness through digital and face-to-face interventions, in line with national efforts to strengthen community-based mental health support. Keywords: urban citizen, isolation, loneliness, virtual friend

Abstract

Family resilience in adolescence measures the ability to cope with challenges and disruptions within the family and engage in positive adaptation in their role as children. To address the limitations of the availability of family resilience measurement tools in the Indonesian language, this study aims to adapt and test the reliability and validity among adolescents. One widely used measurement tool for assessing family resilience internationally is the Family Hardiness Index (FHI), developed as part of The Resilience, Adaptation, and Well-Being Project. The testing was conducted on 276 participants aged 12–17 years (M = 14.5; SD = 1.7), with a gender distribution of 124 males (45%) and 152 females (65%). Psychometric property testing revealed that this adapted instrument met reliability criteria with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.75 and fulfilled construct validity criteria using confirmatory factor analysis. Through these findings, it is hoped that research related to family resilience for Indonesian adolescents will continue to advance, particularly among families facing various challenges and disruptions. Additionally, multiple suggestions and implications arising from this adaptation are discussed in the concluding section of this article.

Abstract

Loneliness is commonly experienced by individuals in urban communities because of the difficulties in establishing close relationships in urban settings. One way to deal with loneliness in the real world is to find virtual friends in cyberspace. In other words, high level of loneliness can cause social relationship in the virtual world to increase and social relationship in the real world to decrease. The social compensation model hypothesized that higher quality interaction with virtual friends could reduce loneliness levels and ultimately increase one's subjective well-being because this interaction is considered a safe relationship and a preference for those who feel isolated. By utilizing the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults - Short Version (SELSA-S), the Positive Negative Relationship Quality (PN-RQ) Scale, and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), this study found that positive relationship quality in cyberspace (with virtual friends) significantly moderated the association between loneliness levels and subjective well-being (N = 300). Therefore, this study’s results show that not all online interactions are detrimental to individual’s mental health. Also, individuals in urban communities should considering focusing more on increasing the quality of interactions, instead of increasing the quantity or number of friendships.
