Abstract

In this digital era, Instagram is growing rapidly not only as social media but also as an educational platform, especially in English language teaching and learning. Research investigating further Instagram usage in English language teaching and learning through the systematic review is still scarcely reported. The purpose of this study is to investigate and synthesize the contribution of previous research (2017-2022) related to Instagram usage and its advantages in the ELT context. Several studies were found on the Sinta, ERIC, and Google Scholar databases. 25 articles were selected based on specified criteria stages that refer to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and three stages of Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The findings of this research showed the four main themes examined in Instagram in ELT context, namely students' perceptions of using Instagram in learning English (40%), the topic of improving students' English skills using Instagram (32%), exploring English learning activities through Instagram (20%), and Instagram use in English teaching and learning as perceived by teachers (8%); and the five main advantages of using Instagram for learning English: improving language skills (40%), providing fun learning to students (23%), fostering creativity, motivation, and self-confidence (19%), increasing student understanding in ESP classes (9%), and provide opportunities for collaboration (9%).

Abstract

The US and Indonesia, two countries that fought for freedom, are fascinating subjects to delve more into, despite their great distance from one another and their distant times of conflict. This research used a Transnational American Studies perspective and comparative-historical analysis. By using comparative historical analysis, this research aimed to explore the similarities and differences that exist in the journey of American independence and Indonesian independence. The results of this research showed that even though the independence movements in the US and Indonesia occurred several centuries apart, they had the same goal, namely opposing colonialism. Both showed the same enthusiasm to fight colonial power and the desire to determine the fate of their nation without interference from other parties. Thomas Paine and Bung Tomo through their writings and speeches led the spirit of independence in the US and Indonesia. Even though they use different communication styles, both have an impact in forming the spirit of resistance and unity of their nation. Additionally, by looking at the history of the struggle of the Indonesian people, it can be seen the spirit of freedom that the US promoted.

Abstract

Violence, bullying, and crime in schools have become prevalent issues in Indonesia, with the government and educational institutions actively working to prevent these behaviors. Peace values, which can be taught through textbooks, play a crucial role in this effort. Despite the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka, no research has explicitly examined the representation of peace values in the English textbooks published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, Research, and Technology. The study investigates the representation of peace values in the English for Nusantara textbook for Junior High Schools. Using Critical Discourse Analysis by Fairclough, the study found that the textbook represents three types of peace values, textually and visually: inner peace, social peace, and peace with nature. However, these values are still represented disproportionately. In practice, this research can be used for English teachers in selecting, designing, and evaluating learning materials which represent the peace values suitably to students. Apart from that, it could be a reference for book authors to develop materials which are balanced in presenting peace values according to Indonesian students' requirements. In addition, this study can be an alternative for the government in curricula design and evaluation.
