Abstract

Turnaround time (TAT) is defined as the time it takes since request/sample is received at the blood bank until blood is cross-matched/reserved and available for transfusion. Turnround time prolongation affects patient care and satisfaction. This study aimed to evaluate TAT for the provision of packed red cells (PRC) at the Blood Transfusion Unit of Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta, analyze factors affected in TAT prolongation, and provide solution the prolongation.  It was an analytical descriptive study with a qualitative design, by calculating the time since receipt of the PRC request at the Blood Transfusion Unit or since blood collection from donors until data input of the crossmatch results in Dr. Sardjito General Hospital management information system (SIMETRIS) completed. Moreover, the  delay in the provision of PRC at the Blood Transfusion Unit was also analyzed. There were 3 (1.5%) of 200 ER samples that met TAT for the provision of the PRC, which was 30 min after receipt of the request at the Blood Transfusion Unit in cito conditions. There were 20 (10%) of 200 samples from the wards that met TAT for the provision of the PRC, which was 2 h after receipt of the request at the Blood Transfusion Unit if the blood stock was available. There were 55 (27.5%) of 200 samples from the wards that met TAT for the provision of the PRC, which was 4 h after the blood was collected from the donor. TAT for the provision of the PRC at the Blood Transfusion for the available blood stock group was 179.08 (67.2 – 396.27) min, replacement blood donor group was 485.38 (126.43 – 910.68) min, and cito group was 121.29 (27.68 – 421.38) min. In conclusion, there is TAT prolongation of PRC provision at the Blood Transfusion Unit of Dr. Sardjito General Hospital.

Abstract

Background: Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) remains a significant health concern among adolescent females. Reliable and effective parameters are required for the monitoring of anemia. Reticulocyte, reported as absolute reticulocyte count or reticulocyte percentage, is a valuable parameter for assessing the degree of effective erythropoiesis in anemia cases. Establishing appropriate reference values is essential for accurate interpretation of reticulocyte measurements. Objective: This study aimed to establish reference intervals for reticulocyte parameters specifically in adolescent females using the Sysmex XN-1000 hematology analyzer. Method: A peripheral blood sample was collected from female high school students aged 14-19 years who were not menstruating at the time of sampling. Blood collection was done via venipuncture into K3-EDTA tubes and further analyzed using the Sysmex XN-1000 hematology analyzer.Results: The established reference intervals were as follows: reticulocyte percentage (Ret%) 0.665–2.099%; absolute reticulocyte count (Ret#) 0.0312–0.0977 × 10⁶/µL; and reticulocyte hemoglobin (Ret-He) 26.524–32.574 pg. Data were normally distributed (p > 0.05). Reference intervals were calculated using the formula mean ± 1.96 standard deviation, with a 95% confidence level.Conclusion: This study successfully established specific reference intervals for reticulocyte parameters in adolescent females using the Sysmex XN-1000 hematology analyzer.

Abstract

Purpose: This narrative review synthesizes studies from 2017-2025 examining the effects of double job roles and work stress on hospital employee performance, emphasizing burnout and job satisfaction as mediators.Methodology: Guided by the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, this review utilized Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, selecting 46 studies (21 representative exemplars) published between 2017 and 2025. The review adopted a narrative design enriched with systematic synthesis elements, following an adapted PRISMA framework for thematic coding and analysis.Results: Double job assignments and work stress consistently emerged as high-strain job demands, leading to role overload and emotional exhaustion. Burnout functions as the primary psychological conduit, translating stress and overload into performance decline and increased medical errors. Conversely, job satisfaction acts as a critical buffer, enhancing resilience, lowering turnover intention, and sustaining motivation. Organizational supports, such as effective leadership and adequate staffing, moderate these negative effects.Applications/Originality/Value: The findings provide critical insights for hospital administrators and health ministries for workforce planning, performance management, and well-being initiatives. The synthesis contributes to the theoretical refinement of the JD-R framework within healthcare contexts, integrating socio-structural variables.
