Abstract

In general, history teachers tend to use methods such as lectures and discussions, using simple media such as blackboards and printed materials like books. However, teachers in Madrasah Tahfizil Qur'an use films as a teaching media, which motivates students to learn and facilitates their understanding and mastery of the subject. This study aims to describe the technique of utilizing films by teachers as a learning media in history, the suitability between the film media and the subject matter, and the students' response to the use of films as a source of learning in history. The research method used is qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques and tools include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data processing is conducted using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. Then, the data is compared, checked for validity, and described. The findings of the field research are as follows: (1) The utilization of film media as a source of learning in history in Madrasah Tahfizil Qur'an is good. History teachers have mastered the steps of using film media and have employed appropriate strategies in teaching. (2) Film media in history learning in Grade XI of Madrasah Tahfizil Qur'an can only be used for specific learning objectives and competencies. (3) The students' response to the utilization of films as a learning media in history in Grade XI of Madrasah Tahfizil Qur'an is very positive. The use of film media in history learning leaves a positive impression on the students, and they are motivated to learn because they can effectively grasp the conveyed material.

Abstract

This research aims to (1) investigate how documentary films can serve as a historical learning resource for Class XI Social Studies students at SMA Negeri 11 Medan, and (2) determine whether using documentary films can improve students’ learning outcomes in history. The research employs a quantitative experimental approach, targeting the entire XI IPS cohort at SMA Negeri 11 Medan. Using purposive sampling, Class XI IPS 1 was designated as the control group and Class XI IPS 3 as the experimental group. Data collection methods included observation, multiple-choice tests, and analysis through normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis tests (t-test with a significance level of α = 0.05). The findings reveal that (1) documentary film use in history lessons significantly enhances students' learning experiences, particularly on the topic of Japan’s entry into Indonesia, by offering an engaging and visual approach. (2) There was a notable improvement in learning outcomes in the experimental group compared to the control group. The post-test average score in the experimental class was 78.69, while the control group scored 78.31. Additionally, hypothesis testing results for both classes produced a sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, affirming the positive influence of documentary films on students’ historical learning outcomes.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan media film dokumenter sebagai sumber pembelajaran sejarah terhadap hasil belajar peserta didik kelas XI IPS di SMA Negeri 11 Medan. Latar belakang penelitian ini didasarkan pada rendahnya minat dan keterlibatan peserta didik dalam pembelajaran sejarah yang cenderung dilakukan secara konvensional. Melalui pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif, penelitian ini menggambarkan bagaimana proses pembelajaran berbasis media visual mampu meningkatkan pemahaman peserta didik terhadap materi sejarah secara kontekstual dan bermakna. Data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, serta analisis hasil pretest dan post-test yang menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada kelas eksperimen dibandingkan kelas kontrol. Film dokumenter yang digunakan berfokus pada materi sejarah masuknya Jepang ke Indonesia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peserta didik lebih aktif, fokus, dan memiliki pemahaman yang lebih dalam terhadap materi setelah mengikuti pembelajaran menggunakan film dokumenter. Temuan ini sejalan dengan penelitian sebelumnya yang menyatakan bahwa media berbasis visual mampu merangsang aktivitas kognitif dan afektif peserta didik secara lebih efektif dibandingkan metode ceramah tradisional. Dengan demikian, film dokumenter terbukti sebagai alternatif media pembelajaran yang inovatif dan efektif untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran sejarah di sekolah menengah
