Abstract

Depression in the elderly is an issue that is often encountered in society. The aging process which results in a decrease in physical function can affect the psychological and social life of the elderly, thereby reducing the quality of life of the elderly. Changes in roles and changes in physical conditions and social life are risk factors that increase the potential for depression experienced by the elderly. The research aimed to describe the signs of depression experienced by the elderly at one of the PPRSLUs in South Kalimantan. It is using quantitative methods with a descriptive survey design. Data were collected using GDS-15 on 89 elderly people. The research results showed that 70% of elderly people were detected as having signs of depression. There are six symptoms that are most commonly experienced, namely feeling that life is empty, often feeling bored, often feeling helpless, feeling worthless in the current situation, feeling that the situation is hopeless, and feeling dissatisfied with one's life. Therefore, it is necessary to modify daily activities with the principles of group activity therapy, promotive and preventive health services for elderly mental health, as well as regular and consistent depression screening services.
