Abstract

This study examines the approach of institutional transformation in Islamic education inside pesantren, with the aim of establishing a sustainable educational institution. The work is guided by a single problem formulation: How may pesantren attain sustainability through institutional change in Islamic education? This study employs a qualitative research methodology with a literature review framework. This study employs a content analysis methodology for its analysis. The dataset utilised in this investigation comprises scholarly journal articles and conference proceedings. The acquisition of all literary works is accomplished by conducting a search on Google Scholar using specific keywords: “Pembaharuan, Pesantren, Pendidikan Islam”. This study demonstrates the long-term viability of institutional transformation in Islamic education within pesantren through many approaches: 11) Diversification in pesantren leadership; 2) Diversification of educational institutions; 3) Integration of the Classical education curriculum with religious education with science; 4) Technology-based education; 5) Responsive to the times; and 6) Restructuring of educational institutions. This study enhances comprehension of the methodology employed by pesantren in rejuvenation, ensuring their continued relevance to contemporary demands while upholding their historic principles.

Abstract

This study examines AI's dual impact in Islamic Studies courses at PTIs, addressing the gap in student perspectives on benefits/limitations. Amidst digital transformation and the need to align technology with Islamic values, this study examines how AI facilitates or impedes spiritually deep learning, thereby guiding ethical integration that preserves core pedagogical principles. A qualitative case study design approach was used, with data collected through semi-structured interviews with 11 active AI student users, participant observation of AI use in lectures, and analysis of AI-assisted lecture documents. Braun and Clarke's thematic data analysis model was applied, with cross-source triangulation to ensure validity. Five key benefits emerged: enhanced efficiency (e.g., rapid drafting), broader access to references, improved conceptual understanding, practical academic support, and enriched learning processes. Conversely, five limitations were identified: deficits in contextual religious knowledge (e.g., oversimplifying sacred texts), accuracy/reliability issues, inadequate referencing, academic dependency (reduced critical thinking), and technical barriers (e.g., internet instability). Findings reflect a single institution’s student cohort, limiting generalizability; variability in AI tool quality among participants may also influence results. Implications include the need for AI literacy modules, specialized Islamic datasets, and offline AI solutions to address inequities in resource-limited regions. This research pioneers two frameworks of AI-Ready Islamic Pedagogy (Critical Verification, Contextual Adaptation, Balanced Integration) and Hybrid Epistemology (combining AI pattern recognition with sanad-based knowledge validation).

Abstract

This article examines how sexuality education in Indonesian pesantren can reconcile Islamic tradition with contemporary reproductive health concerns. Although sexuality-related material has long existed in pesantren through classical fiqh and yellow-book instruction, it has largely been limited to legal-formal themes such as taharah, puberty, menstruation, aurat, and marital ethics, with little attention to consent, bodily boundaries, reproductive health literacy, and sexual violence prevention. Using a qualitative critical literature review, this study analyzes Islamic texts and scholarly publications published between 2015 and 2025, retrieved through Scopus and Google Scholar using the keywords sex education, pesantren, Islamic tradition, and modernity. Data were interpreted through content analysis and critical discourse analysis to identify possible intersections between maslahah-based Islamic reasoning and contemporary health-oriented perspectives. The findings show that the main challenge is not the absence of religious material, but the lack of epistemic reconstruction linking classical concepts to adolescents’ lived realities. Three major pathways emerged: expanding sexuality education beyond marital issues, integrating sexual violence prevention and bodily protection into the curriculum, and enriching traditional pedagogy with dialogical and participatory approaches. The study also finds that implementation requires collaboration among kyai, teachers, students, parents, communities, and the state to address sociocultural taboos and institutional limitations. This article argues that pesantren should be viewed not as barriers to sexuality education, but as institutions with internal theological and pedagogical resources for contextual renewal. It offers a conceptual framework for culturally grounded and religiously legitimate sexuality education in pesantren. Framework highlights the possibility of reconciling tradition and modernity.
